New Year’s Eve festivities in Reykjavík are celebrated with a big bang, as the fireworks explode and the night sky is lit up with a brilliant show. On this short holiday in the world's most northern capital city, enjoy a hosted gala evening of music and entertainment at the stunning Harpa Concert Hall, followed by an amazing fireworks spectacle and festive celebrations. Also enjoy guided excursions to the Golden Circle and Reykjanes Peninsula, as well as some city sightseeing and a visit to the Blue Lagoon.

December 29: Arrive in Reykjavik
On arrival in Reykjavik transfer by airport coach to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore. Enjoy a stroll down Laugavegur and Skolavordur streets, check out the downtown harbour village, or visit one of the many geothermal swimming pools in the area. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game.

December 30: Golden Circle Sightseeing, Icelandic Horses & Greenhouses
Our first stop is the national park of Þingvellir, the UNESCO world heritage site that is the most important historic place in Iceland. It was in the year 930 that Icelanders gathered from all over the country and formed the Althing – the world’s first democratic parliament. Þingvellir is also a place of unique geological interest, where the two continental plates can be seen slowly drifting apart - you can literally walk between the American and Eurasian continental plates. From there, continue to Geysir, passing the village of Laugarvatn, to explore the hot spring area of Geysir with its multicoloured pools of water and mud. Strokkur, the Great Geysir's little brother,  spouts to a height of about 25 metres and erupts at  5-7 minute intervals.

After lunch, drive to the mighty Gullfoss, the "Golden Waterfall", perhaps the most beautiful in the country,  where the river Hvitá tumbles 32 metres in a double cascade. After Gullfoss, head to Fridheimar, a geothermal greenhouse farm where they grow fresh tomatoes all year around. From here, on to the Eldhestar riding centre, to watch a performance by unique Icelandic horses, which have light feet, amazing balance, and the ability to master five gaits, rather than just the traditional three. Return to Reykjavik at around 18:30.

December 31: City Tour, Viking Lunch and New Year's Eve Celebration Dinner in Harpa
This morning at 09:00 we start with a Reykjavik city tour, to see the highlights of Iceland´s exciting capital, including the Whales of Iceland exhibition featuring life sized models of dolphins and whales. Then head to the lava town of Hafnarfjörður, to enjoy a Viking lunch at a well known local restaurant, while listening to traditional Icelandic folk songs. Next, visit the open-air museum of Árbæjar and learn how Icelanders lived in the past.

Rerturn to the hotel around 15:30hrs, for some time at leisure, before transfer to Harpa at 17:30hrs. Enjoy a welcome drink upon arrival, before  the fabulous Gala Dinner is served. After the main course, at around 20:15hrs, visit one of the many bonfires all over the city of Reykjavík, to really experience how Icelander's welcome in the New Year!  After spending a couple of hours at the bonfire, return to Harpa for dessert and coffee and listen to the live band. At 23:45hrs, the hall doors open so you can step outside, to view the fireworks and follow the New Year countdown. At midnight, sparkling wine is served. For those who would like to dance the night away, transfers back to your accommodation start at 12:30hrs and continue on the half hour until 2am.

January 01: Reykjanes Peninsula & Blue Lagoon
Full day excursion to the Reykjanes peninsula,  with its dramatic sea shores, fascinating geology, moonscapes, lava fields and fishing villages. First stop is Bessastaðir, the residence of the Icelandic president, then continue to the Viking World Museum in Reykjanesbær, to see a model of an authentic Viking ship that sailed across the Atlantic ocean to New York in 2000. After a light lunch, continue to the bridge over the continents and the light house located at the very edge of the Reykjanes peninsula, visit a geothermal power plant to see how Icelanders create clean, geothermal energy, then finally reach the Blue Lagoon, for a 2 hour stop for bathing in the pleasantly warm, mineral-rich waters, reputed to have healing properties. Enjoy dinner in the LAVA restaurant (part of the Blue Lagoon), then return to Reykjavik with perhaps (depending on the weather) a northern lights hunt on the way. Arrival back at your hotel is between 22:00-24:00.
