Travelling along roads and mountain track while aboard a specially adapted 4WD coach enables you to combine the classic routes and famous points of interest in Iceland with the uninhabited and volcanic highlands, one of Europe’s vastest areas of wilderness, the Landmannalaugar Nature reserve and the barren black sands of Sprengisandur. This tour truly showcases Iceland’s diverse nature.

DAY 1: Arrival Reykjavik
On arrival in Reykjavik take the airport bus to your hotel for an overnight stay in Reykjavík.
DAY 2: Thingvellir – Gullfoss – Geysir
An exciting day begins with a visit to Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world's first parliament and a jewel of nature, here you can see the continental drift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Next, you’ll travel to the nearby Geysir geothermal area and witness boiling pools and hot springs. The most active geyser, Strokkur, shoots water high into the air every few minutes. Next stop is the Haukadalur Valley, where your group will help to plant some trees as part of a re-forestation programme, then onwards to the beautiful Gullfoss (‘Golden’) waterfall, amongst the most impressive in Iceland. Dinner and overnight in Hvolsvöllur area.
DAY 3: Vík – Dyrhólaey – Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Admire the two classic waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, before enjoying great views from Dyrhólaey headland, where thousands of puffins nest during the summer. A stop in the quaint village of Vík follows, before crossing the Mýrdalssandur outwash plains. The day ends with passing through the vast Eldhraun lava field, the largest on earth since the end of the last Ice Age. Note that visits to Dyrhólaey are not permitted during nesting season – mid-May to late-June. Dinner and overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area for 2 nights.
DAY 4: Jökulsárlón – Skaftafell
The day starts with a drive through beautiful scenery towards the Vatnajökull ice cap, by far the largest in Europe and Iceland's highest peak of Hvannadalshnjúku. Today highlight is Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, where huge icebergs are found. Continue past several outlet glaciers from Vatnajökull and visit at least one. En-route there will also be magnicient views of Skaftafell, a glacial wonderland within Vatnajökull National Park. Dinner and 2nd overnight in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.
DAY 5: Landmannalaugar
Meander along the primitive Fjallabaksleið interior track to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains. This pearl of Iceland’s interior consists of deep valleys and sculptured, often mossy, mountains, many formed in volcanic eruptions under ice-age icecaps, forging a powerfully colourful environment. After a nice walk you may like to take a relaxing swim in a warm stream created by the meeting of hot and cold springs. Dinner and overnight in the Þjórsárdalur area.
DAY 6: Sprengisandur
Discover hidden parts of the Icelandic interior, exploring the vast and desolate wilderness of the Sprengisandur highland route. Sprengisandur is the longest stretch between the South and North. No bridges over the rivers mean several river crossings on this rugged track between the glaciers (if Sprengisandur is closed we will travel on the Kjolur highland route instead). Dinner and overnight in the Lake Mývatn area for 2 nights.
DAY 7: Tjörnes – Ásbyrgi – Dettifoss – Lake Mývatn
An absolutely packed day with a wide variety of landscapes. You’ll travel through Húsavík town and around the Tjörnes peninsula, the most northern point of your journey. Discover the serene horseshoe-shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi National Park that, according to myth, is the hoof-print left by Sleipnir, the magical eight-legged horse of the Norse god Óðinn. Continue to thundering Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, located in the expansive Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The uniquely beautiful nature reserve of Lake Mývatn follows – a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. On the ‘to-do list’ are the solfataras at Hverarönd geothermal region, peculiar lava formations and explosive craters at Krafla. Dinner and 2nd overnight in the Lake Mývatn area.
DAY 8: Akureyri – Skagafjörður
Today visit Goðafoss waterfall before continuing to Akureyri, the vibrant ‘Capital of the North’ and the second largest urban area in Iceland. Enjoy free time in Akureyri. You may like to visit the amazing botanical gardens, the geothermal pool complex, go shopping or just relax in a local café. Continue on to the Skagafjörður area, renowned for horse breeding, as well as being home to many important sites relating to the classic Icelandic Sagas. Dinner and overnight in the Laugarbakki area.
DAY 9: Hvammstangi – Eiríksstaðir – Fellsstrond
Today we head around Vatnsnes Peninsula for the extraordinary rock formation Hvitserkur - a 15 metre tall cliff jutting straight out from the sea, where seals may often be seen resting near the beach. The journey continues through rolling farmlands and across Laxárdalsheiði heath, to the Viking Age house at Eiríksstaðir, the original home of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leifur Eiríksson, two of the world’s most celebrated Vikings. In a replica grass roofed house modern day vikings demonstrate a 1,000 year old lifestyle, sharing their knowledge and crafts. Dinner and overnight in the Fellstrond area.
DAY 10: Snæfellsjökull National Park & Glacier
Today is spent exploring the Snæfellsnes National Park, including Snæfellsjökull glacier, covering a dormant volcanoe which last erupted in 250 AD. According to Jules Verne, you’ll find the 'Centre of the Earth' near here. Continue to Djúpalónssandur pebbled beach. Stop at the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi, with its magnificent columnar basalt rock formations. Take a walk between the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar before driving to Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavík.
