Spend a short break in North Iceland’s fjords, perfect for pristine beauty, silence and aurora opportunities. You’ll stay in both Akureyri and the newly-popular Siglufjordur, two areas focusing on sparkling historical charm in a breathtaking setting.

Day 1: Arrival in Akureyri
On arrival in Akureyri airport, make your own way to your hotel in Akureyri. The town, less than 50 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, is a colourful city, easy to walk around, with a wide range of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. We suggest a visit to the local heated swimming pool, one of the best in Iceland, where the soothing variety of geothermal hot tubs and steam rooms is a perfect way to relax! Overnight in Akureyri.

Day 2: History and Heritage in Skagafjordur Fjord
Today explore Skagafjordur Fjord, where steep mountains and valleys contain some of Iceland’s richest historical traditions. Drive past the jagged peaks of the Drangafjall Mountains en route to a unique “community” of three neighbouring farms who have preserved centuries-old farming traditions. You’ll see a reconstructed turf horse stable and learn about how vital Icelandic horses were to Iceland’s survival, meet Viking-age breeds of Icelandic sheep and goats and view beautiful farm handicrafts created from natural local materials. You’ll also hear about how modern life is on farms so close to the Arctic. Then discover nine centuries of Icelandic history at Holar, an ancient bishopric, university and cultural centre in a beautiful mountain setting. Walk around and discover a collection of original and recreated historical buildings, including Iceland’s oldest stone church and a replica of a 13th century wooden house, and get a glimpse of Viking age literature and culture. Enjoy a lunch buffet here, featuring locally-sourced ingredients then head north along the fjord, enjoying the vast mountains and views of the Arctic Ocean. Keep an eye out for the legendary Saga Island, Drangey. Arrive in Siglufjordur, considered by many Icelanders to be Iceland’s prettiest town. The rest of the day is free and tonight, if the skies are clear, you might see beautiful auroras shimmering over the fjord. Overnight stay in Siglufjordur.

Day 3: Troll Peninsula - Eyjafjordur Fjord - Akureyri
Discover the lively history of 20th century Siglufjordur at the award-winning Herring-Era Museum. You will see how a “gold rush” of herring helped modernise Iceland. Then a scenic drive along the Troll Peninsula and its views of steep mountains and black sand coast- the surreal rock formations make it easy to see how the peninsula got its name. Drive through three mountain tunnels and pass through colourful fishing villages, and in Eyjafjordur (Island Fjord), visit a family-owned fishing plant that produces gourmet salt fish (bacalao) and cured shark.  This afternoon visit the village of Arskogssandur and its craft microbrewery, Kaldi, hear the interesting story of how a local couple started the brewery and take a tour the facility and enjoy a sample of the excellent beer. Arrive in Akureyri in the late afternoon.  Overnight stay in Akureyri.
