Experience the best Greenland has to offer in the winter months. Ilulissat, 300 km north of the Polar Circle, is a beautifully situated town and a fantastic place to enjoy winter pursuits such as dog sledding and cruising amongst giant icebergs. Stay in comfortable 4-star accommodation with a choice of room types - from your hotel it is only a short stroll along the boardwalk to the fjord, for spectacular views and a great spot for seeking the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

The itinerary shown below is the 5 day tour. The 4 day tour does not include the visit to the Hunter's Settlement of Rodebay.

Day 1:  Iceland- Greenland, Introduction to Ilulissat
Mid morning flight from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Ilulissat in West Greenland. On arrival in Ilulissat meet your guide at the airport then transfer to the hotel for an information meeting, followed by an introductory guided walk of the town. Then some free time to explore on your own- perhaps visit the local museum or walk down to the harbour. After a welcome dinner at the hotel this evening, make sure you step outside to check if the Northern Lights are visible! These spectacular light shows are also known as the Aurora Borealis and are frequently seen in Greenland from September through April on clear and crisp nights. Accommodation at Hotel Arctic.

Day 2:  Husky Safari
Today we leave the civilized world behind and enter an Arctic wonderland of low passes and ice covered fjords, where icebergs raise like sculptures, travelling by dog sled in the same manner as the local Greenlanders and the heroic polar explorers. All you will hear is the sound of the sled moving over the ice and the happy noises of the dogs! The route will depend on the snow and ice conditions.  2 persons share each sled and the use of cosy outer fur clothing is included. Remainder of the day at leisure. Tonight don't go to bed too soon-  in this remote and quiet location, you have an improved chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky, should they appear...................

Day 3: Local Family Home Visit & Iceberg Cruise
Come join a local family for a warm welcome, a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. Greenlanders are famous for welcoming visitors into their homes - the latest gossip is shared, you can see their colourful national costumes and of course learn from your hosts all about life so very isolated from the rest of the world. Ilulissat is world famous for its icebergs and today's 2.5 hour cruise provides the perfect opportunity to get close to these gigantic sculptures created by nature. The Ilulisst Icefjord has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004 and contains a massive collection of icebergs that have calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier one by one. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel. Then if conditions are good, perhaps take a walk along the wooden boardwalk from the hotel towards the ocean to search for the Northern Lights. From there you have a fantastic view over the fjord, as well as a possible aurora light show.

Day 4 Hunter's Settlement Rodebay & Farewell Dinner
By boat to the small settlement of Rodebay (Oqaitsut), only accessible by boat or dog sled. The settlement has about 40 residents who are entirely dependent on fishing and hunting - a different world compared to nearby  Ilulissat. Lunch and time to stroll around in the village before returning to Ilulissat. If the fjord is frozen then we will travel by dog sled. Tonight after a farewell dinner at the hotel, step out for a last chance to perhaps see the Aurora.

Day 5: Hike to the Ice Fjord then Ilulissat-Reykjavik.
This morning travel by car as far as the road goes then take an easy hike to a viewing point, from where the icebergs at the mouth of the Ice Fjord can be seen. Then transfer to the airport for your Air Iceland flight back to Reykjavik, at around noon. On arrival, arrangements end.
