Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik
On  arrival in Reykjavik transfer by airport express bus to your hotel. Time at leisure- the city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery.

Day 2: Caving, Eyjafjallajokull area, Black Sand Coast, 4WD Adventures
This morning meet your driver-guide who will brief you on the upcoming excursions. Today you are an explorer as well as a traveller! We start by driving through Reykjavík town centre to give you an introduction to the country and its people. Leaving the city, it won’t take long to reach a remote area, and the first stop is to try some simple caving in an ancient lava tube.  From there we will visit the farm Gaulverjabaer to experience how people live in Iceland’s countryside. Once we reach Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that caused such chaos in 2010, we head north for a 4WD adventure in the Thorsmork Nature Reserve and enjoy a picnic lunch featuring local specialities along the way. Then we’ll visit the waterfall Gljufrabui, only accessible to small groups, then Skogarfoss, where we visit  a traditional turf house. Then continue along the south coast’s famous black sand beaches. We’ll spend the evening at the Hrifunes guesthouse, a cosy home in the countryside, far away from any light pollution and therefore giving us a good chance of glimpsing the elusive Northern Lights.

Day 3: Glacial lagoon, Eldhraun lava field, cosy cottage and Northern Light hunting
After a hearty breakfast, we start the day journeying along the mountain road that crosses Eldhraun, a huge lava field from an eruption in the 18th century that some say was a cause of the French Revolution. Visit the canyon-like Fjadrargljufur, the huge cliffs at Lomagnupur, and incredible basalt columns. Then at Skaftafell National Park, we put on crampons, and with ice pick in hand, we take a walk on Svinafellsjokull glacier itself. We’ll enjoy another picnic lunch then visit the famous Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, with its colourful icebergs and lazy seals. We’ll spend the evening again at Hrinues.

Day 4: Hekla volcano,  bathing in a hot lake, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir
We’ll start the day in Thjorsardalur, a remote valley. Once again, we’ll board our 4WD vehicles for an adventure- this time in the snow.  We stop at Fossabrekkur, to drink the pristine water directly from the waterfall. Depending on the snow conditions, we might stop at the frozen lake by the Hekla volcano, or visit Haifoss, the highest waterfall in Iceland, or drive by the Gjain canyon. We’ll also visit a house built in Viking style, and  the Hjalp waterfall. You then have the opportunity to bathe in a secret naturally warm lake, an experience very popular with the locals. We’ll end the day visiting the three pearls of Iceland’s Golden Circle tour: the big waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting hot spring Geysir and the national park and UNESCO site Thingvellir, site of Iceland’s first parliament and a place where two tectonic plates are slowly but steadily separating. Then say farewell with a taste of our local schnapps, brennivin, and a bit of fermented shark meat to go with it, (if you are brave!) before returning to Reykjavik for overnight.
