Experience Norway’s unique culture from  the town of Alta, where the blue light of winter glows over the landscape. Here in the land of the ancient Sami peoples, enjoy a truly wonderful cultural  experience. Learn about the history and culture of the Sami, enjoy a guided city walk including the amazing Arctic Lights Cathedral  and the famous Alta Musuem, search for the fabled Northern Lights, visit the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, try a short dog sled ride and visit the edge of the world - the North Cape.

Day 1: Alta Arrival
Upon arrival, make your own way to your hotel. Time at leisure. Alta is the largest town in the north, and the world's first Northern Light observatory was built here at the end of the 19th century,  earning Alta the nickname "Town of the Northern Lights." Alta's location in the inner reaches of the Alta Fjord offers forests, mountain plateaux and coastal and mountain landscapes, and means winter here is often not as harsh as elsewhere.

Day 2: Privately Guided City Tour and Evening Search for the Northern Lights
This morning at 10:00 start your privately guided city tour. Highlights include a visit to Alta's fantastic Northern Lights Cathedral,  with its amazing architecture inspired by the Aurora Borealis. The swirling waves of the Northern Lights were the inspiration for the spiral design of the titanium clad building, and Alta Museum, with exhibits of local rock carvings dating from over 6,000 years ago. (Please note the outdoor rock carvings are not visible in winter.) Time at leisure before your evening Northern Lights excursion. Pick up at your hotel and travel by car to the best viewpoints, far away from any sources of light pollution in the town.  Your guides are keen photographers and they will help you capture get the best photos possible. Then return to your hotel. Snacks and hot drinks included.

Day 3: The North Cape
Today start out early for your privately guided all day car trip to the North Cape, the northern most point of Europe where the Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean.  Here, there is no dry land between you and the North Pole except for the Svalbard archipelago! Drive through the winter landscape in comfort, hearing stories from your guide about life in the arctic. On arrival at the Cape explore the museum, before heading out to the Cape itself.  Then return to the hotel, with stops along the way for coffee and to stretch your legs.

Day 4: Sami Culture and Reindeer Experience (Day or Evening)
A unique and intriguing experience that will give you a glimpse into the life of the ancient Sami people. Visit a local Sami family at their reindeer herding camp  just outside the town. From there, your hosts will take you to a nearby spot in the wilderness, perfect for a delightful safari in reindeer-pulled sleds. You can choose to take this as a morning or evening excursion. In the daytime, watch the wild and beautiful scenery pass by,  or in the evening, enjoy the shadowy darkness and keep an eye on the sky overhead – maybe the Northern Lights will appear!  After the ride, you’ll spend some time in a traditional tent around a fire, with hot drinks and the chance to hear about Sami culture and life. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 5: Snowmobile Safari and Visit to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel
This morning enjoy a snowmobile safari which includes a visit to the fabulous Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Set in beautiful natural surroundings by the banks of the Alta river, the extraordinary Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is a luxurious hotel where the entire interior and exterior is made anew each year of snow. The hotel opens its doors in January each year and melts away again in the spring. 2 persons share the driving of each snowmobile, so you can both enjoy the thrill of driving, and the view as a passenger. There is time to explore the Igloo Hotel and enjoy lunch (please note lunch is NOT included). After your visit, return to Alta.
