South to North by Train

Travel by train through the heart of inland Sweden on this wonderful tour. See all the wonders of Lapland with its pristine alpine scenery & wilderness, experience Sámi culture and also delight in the light, summer nights of the far north. The railcars of the famous Inlandsbanan train will transport you across inland Sweden and above the Arctic Circle, into Swedish Lapland.  

Day 1 Mora
Arrive in Mora and time at leisure.

Day 2 Mora-Östersund
Delightfully located on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. Make time for a visit to Zorngården the home of the beloved Swedish landscape painter Anders Zorn (entry included), the Vasa Race Museum or maybe take a walk along beautiful Siljan. In the afternoon, board your Inlandsbanan train for a journey through the wilderness of Härjedalen county. Evening arrival in Östersund, Jämtland’s county town.

Day 3 Östersund
This is a true summer city and it has a great deal to offer. Take a walk to the heritage museum Jamtli History Land and meet up with people and places from days gone by. (Entry included), or perhaps you want to discover the city on your own? Bikes can be hired from the tourist information office, where you can also pick up a map of cycling routes. Overnight in Ostersund.

Day 4 Ostersund - Museum of Inlandsbanan - Arvidsjaur
Travel on through the southern parts of Lapland, taking a break at Storuman, where you can visit the station house which has been designated as a Listed Building. In Sorsele, we visit the Inlandsbanan museum, for an insight into how the railway was built, over 100 years ago.

Day 5 Arvidsjaur: The Arctic Circle and Midnight Sun
Arvidsjaur offers a wide variety of activities, from fishing to canoeing, or even a visit to Lappstaden Sami village. In the afternoon, re-board Inlandsbanan and just before reaching Jokkmokk, as you cross the Arctic Circle, the train makes a stop. On the way to Gällivare, travel through Laponia World Heritage Site. From Gällivare, there is a coach excursion to the summit of Dundret (until 30 Jul), where you can enjoy the most astounding views in the light summer night and, for a period of around one month, also experience the Midnight Sun. After 01 Aug, a guided tour is offered instead.

Day 6 Gällivare
This is the train's northernmost destination and Gällivare offers various sights and activities. Visit the tourist information office, next to the railway station, for ideas on how to spend your day here. 

Day 7 Gällivare–Vilhelmina
After an early breakfast, the train starts the return journey south towards Östersund. The scenery is quite different, when seen from a new perspective. Just before we arrive in Vilhelmina, which is this day’s final destination, there is a stop where dinner can be purchased. Overnight in Vilhelmina.

Day 8 Culture rich Vilhelmina
While you are here, you may like to visit both the Hembygdsmuseet Museum and the old church village of Kyrkstan before the train departs. You will now leave Swedish Lapland and continue past Strömsund, through a landscape of lakes and mountains. In the evening you arrive in back in Östersund.

Day 9 Östersund-Mora
After breakfast, travel by regular train to Mora. On arrival, your tour arrangements conclude.
