Trondheim is northern Norway's premier city. The settlement there was founded in 997 as a trading post, and was the capital of Norway during the Viking Age until 1217. Today, instead of Viking raiders and Hanseatic traders, you'll find jazz musicians and an international student body savouring Trondheim's vibrant city life. The city's cafes spill out onto the cobblestoned streets lined with colourful wooden buildings, while the twin towers and copper-clad spire of Europe's northernmost gothic cathedral frame the southern skyline.

Travel north by train from Oslo to Trondheim then head south by overnight ferry from Trondheim to Bergen. Stay 1 night in Oslo, 2 nights in Trondheim, 1 night onboard the ferry, and 1 night in Bergen. Extra nights in Oslo,  Trondheim and/or Bergen can be added - please ask us.

Day 1 Oslo Arrrival
On arrival in Oslo make your own way to your hotel. Enjoy some of Oslo's fine museums including the Viking Ship Museum, the Fram Polar Expedition museum, the Kon Tiki Museum and Vigelund Sculpture Park. Also take a stroll through the old wharf area of Bryggen, now bustling with bars and cafes.  Visit the Munch Museum, the Maritime Museum, Akershus Fortress, and the stunning Opera House, where you can walk onto the roof!  Overnight in Oslo at Thon Hotel Opera or similar.

Day 2 Oslo - Trondheim
Today make your own way to the central railway station to take the train to Trondheim. The Dovre Railway line runs between Oslo and Trondheim through the beautiful Gudbrandsdalen valley and across the mighty Dovrefjell mountain range, a trip of around 7 hours. On arrrival in Trondheim, make your own way to your hotel. The jewel of the town is the glorious Nidaros Cathedral, the national sanctuary of Norway. Dating back to the 11th century, this Gothic masterpiece features an ornate rose window and a detailed west facade, and in the nearby Archbishop’s Palace Museum you will see archaeological findings and sculptures, including gargoyles, that once graced the cathedral. Or visit Ringve Museum, a charming music museum in a former manor house and barn, the Royal Residence, the largest wooden palace in Scandinavia, and much more. 2 nights in Trondheim at Thon Gildevangen Hotel or similar.

Day 3 Trondheim: Day at Leisure
Spend the day exploring Trondheim. This city in the Middle Ages was one of the most visited holy destinations in Europe, as pilgrims came to worship at the Cathedral. This magnificent building was started in the year 1035, and completed around 1300. After being damaged by several fires in the 15th and 16th century, large parts of the Cathedral lay in ruins for several hundred years. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later the Cathedral was fully restored to its original grandeur. The Cathedral also boasts the beautiful Steinmeyer organ, recently returned to it's former glory. 2nd overnight in Trondheim.
