Day 1 Stockholm-Mora
Your trip starts with the regular train from Stockholm to Mora, where you will spend the first night of your journey. Mora has many cultural attractions - perhaps visit Zorngården and the Vasa Race museum, or go shopping for a traditional wooden Dalahästen horse.
Day 2 Mora–Östersund
The morning is spent in Mora, where you board the Inlandsbanan train headed for Östersund in the afternoon. The train will slow down as it passes the waterfalls Storstupet and Helvetesfallet, which were used for timber floating, to allow you to admire their beauty and drama. You will be travelling through Hälsingland and Härjedalen, the highest province in Sweden, and in the evening you arrive in Östersund, the main town of Jämtland.
Day 3 Summer city Östersund
Delight in a whole day of new experiences in Östersund. Walk to Jamtli History Land, an open air history museum with fabulous exhibits from many different periods of Swedish history, then perhaps stroll the shores of the enormous Storsjön (Great Lake), or visit one of the charming handicraft shops.
Day 4 Östersund–Arjeplog
Today the journey continues north past Ströms Vattudal. Look out over extensive forests and lakes teeming with fish. The Inlandsbanan now enters Swedish Lapland. In Slagnäs the journey continues by coach to the Båtsuoj Sami Centre, where you can experience authentic Sami life with all your senses. Enjoy a Sami meal served in a traditional Sami hut whilst listening to a storyteller. Then on to Arjeplog for overnight.
Tonight instead of staying in the hotel in Arjeplog you can spend an optional overnight in a traditional reindeer hide Sami tepee- simple accommodation with seperate shared facilities, at the Båtsuoj Sami Centre, with an afternoon transfer the next day (day 5) to continue the journey on Inlandsbanan.
Day 5 Arjeplog–Jokkmokk
The day begins with a walk around Arjeplog, a town with a rich Sami heritage. After a coach trip up Galtispuoda Mountain and lunch, visit the Silver museum, then return to Inlandsbanan by bus. Re-board the train then shortly before reaching Jokkmokk where you will cross the Arctic Circle – the border of the Land of the Midnight Sun.
Day 6 Jokkmokk
In Jokkmokk you have nearly a full day to visit attractions such as the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum Ájtte and Jokkmokk Alpine Garden, where you can study the mountain flora.
