Day 3 OSLO – MYRDAL – FLÅM: Bergen Railway & Flamsbanan Railway
Breakfast at the hotel before making your own way to Oslo Centralstation - the train from Oslo to Myrdal departs at 08.05am and arrives at 12.59pm. Travelling on the Bergen Railway is a unique experience on Northern Europe's highest-altitude railway line. One of the greatest challenges is the harsh and changeable weather. The line is exposed to deep low-pressure centres from the west, which can mean strong winds and heavy snow for part of the year. Keeping the railway open demands great effort and technical expertise. Today, skilled workers, effective equipment, tunnels and snow tunnels make the Bergen Railway one of the safest and most comfortable ways of travelling between Oslo and Bergen.
Change trains at Myrdal (just cross the platform) then continue on the fabulous mountain railway down to Flåm and the Sognefjord. Departing at 13.00pm and arriving at 13.50pm, the train journey provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery. On the 20 km-long train ride you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes. Marvel at the exhilarating ride on the amazing railway, a masterpiece of engineering ascending 2,838 feet in less than one hour. The descent from Myrdal to Flåm offers opportunities for photo shots of some exciting waterfalls and mountain scenery. Surrounded by spectacular landscapes & waterfalls, the train makes its way down to the charming fjordside village of Flam. Arrive in Flåm and walk across to your hotel, located a short walk from the train station. Enjoy dinner and the next 2 nights at Fretheim Hotel, Flåm.
Day 4 FLÅM- Day on the Fjords & Snowshoe Hike
Today get ready for some fun on the fjord! The tour begins in Flåm and takes you deep into the Nærøyfjord, to the charming little village of Undredal. Along the way stops will be made where your local guide will explain about the rich wildlife of the area, the distinctive nature and the cultural history of the tiny villages and local farms scattered along the fjord. The many waterfalls will be frozen solid; the fjord is calm, the water clear and the snow lies just like frosting on the high, steep mountains. On the return from the Nærøyfjord stop at Undredal, idyllically situated on the shores of the fjord, surrounded by high mountains. With its 85 inhabitants and 450 goats it truly is a special little village. In Undredal visit the local shop for hot drinks and hear from one of the locals about life along the fjord.
The fjord tour departs at 11.45am from Flåm and returns at 14.15pm. On your return, enjoy a snowshoe hike. Hike from fjord to mountain, enjoy the amazing views, and experience getting around on these traditional snowshoes. Your guide will tell you about the unique local nature, and hot drinks will be served to keep you toasty! The trip is suitable for beginners - general fitness but no prior experience needed. The snowshoe trip departs Flam at 15:00pm and takes you by minibus to Stegastein where the hike begins. Arrive back in Flåm around 18:00/18:30pm. Tonight, dine at the nearby award winning Aegir Brewery and Pub tonight, with craft beers and great Viking food. Sit by the fire and taste a few ales while enjoying a 5 course feast.
