From Oslo to the charming town of Balestrand, with an excursion to the amazing nearby Jostedalsbreen Glacier & fjords, and on to Bergen.  Or, you can do the tour as a circle tour from Bergen and back. The 5 day itinerary Oslo-Bergen is immediately below and the 5 day circle tour Bergen - Bergen follows. Extra nights in Oslo, Bergen or Balestrand can be added.

Day 1 Oslo Arrival 
On arrival in Oslo make your own way to your hotel. Oslo is a Viking city, set amongst rolling green hills at the northernmost point of the 100 km long Oslo Fjord. Enjoy some of Oslo's fine museums including the Viking Ship Museum, the Fram Polar Expedition museum, the Kon Tiki Museum and Vigelund Sculpture Park. Also take a stroll through the old wharf area of Bryggen, now bustling with bars and cafes.  Visit the Munch Museum, the Maritime Museum and Akershus Fortress. Accommodation at Thon Hotel Opera, or similar.

Day 2  Oslo - Mrydal - Flam - Balestrand 
Make your own way to the Oslo Centralstation for the morning train from Oslo to Myrdal on the Bergen Line. The Bergen Railway is unique and it is Northern Europe's highest-altitude railway line. This train ride, voted one of the 20 best in the world, takes you over Norway’s “mountainous rooftop” and through charming villages like Gol and Geilo. In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to the Flåm Railway - just cross the platform. Then start your journey on the famous Flamsbanen Railway.  The train journey provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery. On the 20 km-long train ride you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascade down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms cling dizzily to sheer slopes. On arrival in Flam explore the charming small village and the Flåm Railway Museum. Then take  the express boat from Flåm to Balestrand, a peaceful 2 hour peaceful tcruise on the Auerlandfjord and the Sognefjord. On arrival in Balestrand, walk the short distance from te epier  to Hotel Kvikne’s, for overnight and dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 Balestrand: "Book Town" and Glacier Visit
Cruise from Balestrand to Fjaerland. Fjærland is known as the Norwegian "book town", with book shops situated just about everywhere, including in old cow sheds and pigpens, on the ferry quay and in the Hotel Mundal, a charming old wooden building in 19th century style still in business as a hotel. Some of the book stores are combined with art galleries, souvenir shops and handicraft boutiques. Browse the many fascinating books then continue on to the Glacier Museum. The Glacier Museum is the official visitor centre of the Jostedalsbreen National Park, and it contains some great exhibits explaining how the glacier was formed and is still evolving and describing the natural history of the area. From the Museum continue onto the glacier itself, the largest glacier on mainland Europe. After admiring the glacier, take the bus back to Fjaerland and then by boat to Balestrand. Dinner and overnight at Kvikne's Hotel. 

Day 4 Balestrand- Bergen 
Today take the ferry from Balestrand,  along the "fjord of dreams" and the west coast of Norway, to Bergen. On arrival, make your own way from the pier to your hotel. Bergen is a lively city beautifully situated on the fjord & surrounded by 7 mountains, with a long history as a Hanseatic trading port.Walk along Bryygen, the historic old wharf area with timbered houses, formerly the homes and warehouses of wealthy merchants, explore the fish and flowers markets and enjoy a meal in one of the many cafes and restaurants of this lovely historic Hanseatic town. And make sure you take the funicular ride up to Mt  Fløien for a panoramic view of Bergen and its surroundings. Overnight and breakfast at Augustin Hotel or similar.

Day 5  Bergen Departure
Arrangements end after breakfast. Or, if would like to take the train from Bergen back to Oslo, this can be added, for a supplement.

 The 5 day Discover The Sognefjord circle tour Bergen to Bergen has the following itinerary:

Day 1 Bergen
Arrive Bergen and make your own way to your hotel. The day free to explore on your own. Bergen is a lively city beautifully situated on the fjord & surrounded by 7 mountains, with a long history as a Hanseatic trading port. Day 2 Bergen – Balestrand
Morning ferry from Bergen to Balestrand, an idyllic village on the Sognefjord. The attractions of this charming fjordside town include St Olav’s stave style church, the aquarium, some very pleasant walks and fjord kayaking in the scenic & lush mountain landscape. Dinner and next 2 overnights at the delightful Kvikne's Hotel.Operated by generations of the same family since 1877, and graced with an extensive collection of artworks and antiques, the hotel is part of Norwegian history. Prominent guests include royalty, presidents, prime ministers, film stars and artists. 

Day 3 Balestrand: "Book Town" and Glacier Visit

Arrangements end after breakfast.
