Welcome to a train journey through 2 countries and along several historic railways- the Inlandsbanan, Nordlandsbanen, Mittbanan and Meråkerbanen lines, discovering the beautiful and varied natural landscapes of the Nordic region. The journey starts and finishes in Stockholm and takes you through the heart of inland Sweden, then past sea, lakes and mountains to Bodø and Narvik. From northern Norway the journey turns south and heads back into Sweden, where you will see the magnificent Abisko National Park and enjoy the amazing view from Dundret Mountain in Gällivare.

Day 1 Stockholm-Mora
Your trip starts with the regular train from Stockholm to Mora, where you will spend the first night of your journey. Mora has many cultural attractions - perhaps visit Zorngården and the Vasa Race museum, or go shopping for a traditional wooden Dalahästen horse.
Day 2 Mora–Östersund
The morning is spent in Mora, where you board the Inlandsbanan train headed for Östersund in the afternoon. The train will slow down as it passes the waterfalls Storstupet and Helvetesfallet, which were used for timber floating, to allow you to admire their beauty and drama. You will be travelling through Hälsingland and Härjedalen, the highest province in Sweden, and in the evening you arrive in Östersund, the main town of Jämtland.
Day 3 Summer city Östersund
Delight in a whole day of new experiences in Östersund. Walk to Jamtli History Land, an open air history museum with fabulous exhibits from many different periods of Swedish history, then perhaps stroll the shores of the enormous Storsjön (Great Lake), or visit one of the charming handicraft shops.The Storsjöhyttan glassworks is within walking distance down by the marina and on a clear day visit Arctura, the highest restaurant in Östersund, with view for miles around over mountains, lakes and forests.
Day 4 Mittbanan and Meråkerbanan Östersund–Trondheim, Norway
Today’s journey will take you into Norway via the winter ski resorts of Åre and Storlien. On arrival in Trondheim perhaps explore the fantastic Nidarosdomen, the vast and historic Cathedral of Trondheim.
Day 5 Nordlandsbanan Trondheim–Bodø
In the morning board the Nordlandsbanen train, which runs from Trondheim to Bodø in the north. On this beautiful train journey you will experience the magnificent natural landscape of northern Norway, with its lakes and mountains. The route has been described as one of the most beautiful train journeys in Europe. Before you arrive at Bodø in the evening, you will cross the Arctic Circle.
Day 6 Bus Bodø–Narvik
Today you will take the scheduled bus service from Bodø up to Narvik, travelling across small mountain passes, through pretty villages, along fjords and through tunnels. A 25 minute ferry ride will take you across Tysfjorden – with mountain tops all around - to Narvik for overnight.
Day 7 Ofotbanen and Malmbanan Narvik–Gällivare
At midday, the train journey continues, taking you back into Sweden. On the Norwegian side of the border the train travels along the mountain slopes with a spectacular view across the fjords. After crossing the border you reach Abisko National Park and the beautiful Lapporten valley, before arriving in Gällivare late in the afternoon. In the evening you can join a bus trip up to the top of Dundret Mountain to enjoy the fantastic views, bathed in the wondrous light of the Midnight Sun.
Day 8 Inlandsbanan Gällivare–Arvidsjaur
Today you will travel on the Inlandsbanan line to Arvidsjaur, crossing the Arctic Circle once more. The natural landscape on this leg is completely different from that encountered on the journey north – here it is characterized more by marshs, lakes and forests. There is time to visit the Navy Museum in Moskosel or Lappstaden, the largest preserved Sami church town in Sweden.
Day 9 Inlandsbanan Arvidsjaur-Östersund
Morning free before the train departs at lunchtime. At the first stop in Sorsele you can visit the heritage railway Inlandsbanan Museum. Continue on through inland Sweden with frequent meal stops, for overnight in Ostersund.
Day 10 Östersund - Stockholm
Today the regular train takes you to back to Stockholm.
