Experience an unforgettable winter adventure in the region surrounding Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier,  on the southeast coast of Iceland.  Nestling below the mighty glacier is the charming fishing town of Hofn, an ideal base for exploring this incredible region. And a wonderful  place to search for the Northern Lights! Hofn is also famous for its seafood- don’t forget to sample some of the fabulous fresh langoustine caught from the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean, a speciality in all the local restaurants.

Your tour arrangements include 2 nights accommodation in Reykjavik, return flights Reykjavik/Hofn, and 2 days car hire with 2 nights accommodation in Hofn.  You can also add extra nights in Reykjavik.

Day 1 Arrival in Reykjavik

On arrival in Reykjavik transfer by airport coach to your hotel. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2 Reykjavik - Hofn

Today make your own way to Reykjavik Domestic Airport for the short flight to Hofn (flight times vary depending and the flight duration is approximately one hour). On arrival in Hofn, pick up your rental car from the airport and drive into teh village to your hotel. Once you have checked in, perhaps take a scenic walk through the village down to the harbour, where you might see fishermen land their catch of the day. 2 nights in Hofn.

Day 3 Explore Hofn and Surroundings

Hofn's proximity to Vatnajokull Glacier provides great opportunity to experience glacial wonders in the region. We suggest taking a tour to Jokulsarlon, the Glacier Lagoon, where you might see seals swimming between the huge floating icebergs. Or try glacier walking in Skaftafell, a glacier-ringed nature preserve in Vatnajokull National Park, and visit the Thorbergur Cultural Centre near the Glacial Lagoon, honouring a favourite Icelandic author.  2nd overnight in Hofn.

Day 4 Hofn - Reykjavik

Time at leisure before driving back to Hofn Airport to return the car, before your flight back to Reykjavik Domestic Airport. On arrival there, make your own way to your hotel. Overnight in Reykjavik.
