On the edge of the wild and beautiful Lake Inari sits the small village of Inari, home to the Finnish Sámi Parliament, and the heartland of Sami culture in Finland. On this tour experience an insight into the history and culture of the Sámi people with a visit to the Siida Sámi Museum. Then enjoy some exciting winter fun activities including a husky safari, cross country skiing and a snowmobile ride. Each evening search for the fabled Aurora in a different way- by reindeer sleigh, car and by snowshoe. There are many enchanting places in the  environment surrounding the village, including Ukko Island, Otsamo Fell and Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church.

Day 1 Arrival & Aurora Information Session
On arrival at Ivalo airport transfer to your hotel in Inari. Upon check in at your hotel you will be given your winter outdoor clothing for use during your stay and vouchers to the Siida Sami Museum.

This evening you will learn more about the Northern Lights and the nature of the Inari area.  Your guide will take you through the eight seasons of Lapland while showing you beautiful pictures of the Aurora and the Arctic nature.  You will learn why the Northern Lights appear and what life is like in the Arctic region.  You will also learn which sites to use for the aurora forecasts and about camera settings for photographing the Aurora.

Day 2  Snowmobiling, Sámi Culture & Reindeer Sleigh Aurora Ride
This morning’s snowmobile safari will take you across the frozen Lake Inari, also known as the Sámi sea, to some of the historical sites of the surrounding area. We will visit what was once the old Sámi winter village centre in Pielpajärvi, where now only the wilderness church remains. We will also pay our respects to the rugged ancient Sámi sacrificial island, Ukonkivi, or ‘Ukko’s Rock’. During the morning we will take a break and enjoy coffee and snacks by an open fire. 2 persons share the driving of each snowmobile.

This afternoon we suggest you use your tickets to visit Siida, the Sámi Museum. Siida is a window into Sámi culture and the diverse nature of Northern Lapland, and here you can learn about  the culture, art and nature of the region throughout the year. The Museum is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

In the evening, experience a truly unique and atmospheric way to travel into the winter night, sitting back comfortably in the reinderr drawn sleigh and staring at the sky, while the reindeer quietly step through the snow- maybe you will see the magical Aurora Borealis.

Day 3 Husky Safari & Snowshoe Search For The Northern Lights
This morning you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to meet the energetic huskies, who will be eagerly waiting to take you on a ride into the white wilderness. The mushers may ask you to help them harness the dogs and will then show you how to steer them through the forest and on the frozen waters. 2 persons share the driving of each sled.

In the evening it’s time to strap on the snowshoes for a very different experience. Snowshoeing is probably the most peaceful way to go in search of the dancing auroras and you will be amazed at how silently you slip through the night. Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to your starting point, from where you will walk out into the quiet darkness. The feeling of witnessing the magical lights when surrounded by nature is one that will stay with you forever.  Hot juice will be provided to warm you up.

Day 4  Cross Country Ski School & Aurora Hunting By Snowmobile
Before roads, cars and snowmobiles the only way to get around in Lapland in winter was on skis or sleighs! Learn to get around like the locals and experience the freedom of cross-country skiing. Your guide will teach you the basics of using cross country skis in a safe environment, before you go out and test your newly learnt skills.

In the evening enjoy a final hunt for the Aurora by snowmobile. With its remote location in the far North away from the bright lights of big cities, Inari is an ideal place for observing the Northern Lights. Once it’s dark, travel away from the village glow to a location with the best view of the sky that night. If the weather and luck are on our side, you should get to witness nature’s own magical dancing light show!

Day 5: Day at Leisure
Today relax - perhaps explore on your own, on snowshoes or cross country skiis. Or just rest and enjoy the stillness of the winter quiet.
