Just below the Arctic Circle, discover the beauty and unique attractions of Lake Myvatn in winter. The lake's surroundings offer an incredible variety of landscapes and geological formations. Immerse yourself in nature while the Aurora Borealis dances in the clear winter skies. North Iceland boasts an exotic beauty, and is famous for moonlike volcanic craters, ash cones, lava fields and boiling mud pits and in the evenings, this area just south of the Arctic Circle is a prime location for hunting for the Northern Lights.

Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavik
From Keflavik Airport transfer by coach to your hotel in Reykjavik city. Perhaps visit one of Reykjavik’s many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game.Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Reykjavik - Akureyri - Lake Myvatn
This morning make your own way to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport for the morning flight to Akureyri, the Capital of the North. On arrival in Akureyri, transfer to your hotel near Lake Myvatn -  on the way enjoy a short sightseeing tour of the Lake Myvatn area, renowned for its beauty and geological wonders. The Northern Lights might dance around tonight, so be sure to take a walk before going to sleep!  2 overnights with dinners in the Lake Myvatn area, at Sel Hotel Myvatn or similar.

Day 3: Lake Myvatn Day at Leisure
Today explore the amazing Lake area on your own. Lake Mývatn is one of Europe´s greatest natural treasures. Shaped by repeated volcanic eruptions and seismic activity down through the ages, the landscape around the 36.5 km2 lake, situated at an altitude of 277m above sea-level, provides a spectacular panorama of surreal lava, crater and cave formations, sulphur-streaked mountains, and sweeping wetlands teeming with plant and birdlife. Explore the surroundings on the numerous well-marked paths, or follow the signs along the National Road guiding you to all major places of interest such as Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá, Skútustadagígar, Höfdir, Lofthellir, Leirhnjúkur, Krafla and the hot springs east of Námskardur.

Or visit the nearby Myvatn Nature Baths, to bathe in the warm, therapeutic waters. You can also visit the baths in the evening, for a late night relaxation in the lagoon, whilst searching for the Northern Lights. 

Day 4: Akureyri - Reykjavik
Today transfer from your hotel into Akureyri, with time to explore the city. North Iceland's trade and cultural centre, Akureyri sits on a scenic fjord and is easily explored. In the afternoon, it's time for the flight back to Reykjavik. On arrival in Reykjavik, make your own way to your hotel. Overnight in Reykjavik at Icelandair Natura Hotel or similar.

Day 5: Reykjavik Departure
Arrangements end with your transfer by coach back to Keflavik Airport.
