Just have a few days for a winter Iceland experience? This 4 day / 3 night self-drive tour allows you to experience the authentic Icelandic countryside, while staying in comfortable accommodation away from the bright lights of the city so you can search the winter night skies for the Northern Lights.

Amidst snow-capped black lava, soak in the soothing waters of the Blue Lagoon. Then tour the sites of the famous Golden Circle — the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, two-tiered waterfall Gullfoss (the ‘Golden Falls’) and the awe-inspiring eruptions of Strokkur in a field of geysers and hot springs.Of course, the northern lights may also make an appearance!

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland - 50km
On arrival at Keflavik Airport pick up your rental car. Your day is free to spend at your leisure- perhaps make a stop at the world-renowned Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, located just 15 minutes from the airport, on your way into the city. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2: South Shore Adventure: Geothermal pools and waterfalls - 190km
Leave the city this morning. The journey along the south shore follows wintry countryside, where the ominous Hekla volcano can be seen on a clear day and where majestic mountains meet wide plains. The landscape is adorned with spectacular waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can enjoy a unique viewpoint by walking behind the curtain of thundering water. Head on to Vik, a village perched on the edge of a magnificent black-sand beach.  From the beaches, you can see surreal basalt columns said to be the remains of trolls frozen in place by the rising sun. Vik is also well known for its woollen handicrafts, which you can check out at the Vikurpron shop.  The nearby Myrdalsjokull glacier and the black sand beaches make a magnificent setting for the northern lights (perhaps to be seen on cold and clear nights). Overnight in Vik area.

Day 3: Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir - the "Golden Circle" - 364km
Enjoy a day visiting the natural gems of the Icelandic countryside. Head for the geothermal fields of Geysir, with bubbling mud pools and the regularly erupting Strokkur geyser. Then visit the dramatic, two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade. Finally, stop at UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. Return to Reykjavik for overnight.
