Day 1 Tromsø
Check-in to your hotel in Tromsø. The remainder of the day at leisure to explore. This university town has a lively atmosphere and friendly locals. If you have time, we recommend the following attractions: the Arctic Cathedral for it’s daring architecture, Polaria Aquarium (don’t miss the Northern Lights & Spitsbergen Arctic Wilderness films), the Polar Museum to learn about the role Tromsø has played in Arctic exploration, and the MS Polstjerna, a well preserved sailing vessel from 1949.
Day 2 Tromsø – Wilderness Camp Tamok and Northern Lights Hunt
Day at leisure in Tromsø, before your late afternoon coach transfer to Camp Tamok. This wilderness camp serves as the start and end point for your various excursions, as well as being your home for the next 2 nights. The first adventure is a Northern Lights tour tonight. The camp is located in a climatic zone of stable, dry weather, with many days of clear skies, and is therefore an excellent place for spotting the Aurora Borealis, and the dark and quiet surroundings hold a genuine Arctic atmosphere. Also, in this uninhabited area, no artificial light will disturb your experience! Your excursion tonight includes a guided 2 kilometre walk through the valley, and you may also travel by minibus to chase the lights, depending on the weather. Your guide has a lot of interesting knowledge and stories to share with you by the open fire, where you will relax during the excursion and enjoy a hot meal, sitting in the dining lavvu or traditional Sami tent. Then return to the camp, for overnight in a sleeping lavvu or cabin.
Day 3 Reindeer Safari & Snowmobile Adventure
Today try reindeer-sledding; the oldest form of transport in the north & an ancient part of Sami culture. Driving in pairs, there is one sled per reindeer and the journey travels across the valley of Tamok; the safari also includes lassoing and learning about local culture, history & traditional handicrafts, during a visit to a Sami family lavvu. Lunch will be served upon your return to the camp.
In the late afternoon, you’ll test the elements the modern way... on a snowmobile excursion into the local mountains (2 persons per vehicle). This exhilarating and exciting tour takes you through the dramatic, snow covered Finn valley, past scenic mountains starting at 250m above sea level and climbing up to 900m. The trail has a distance of 15 km each way,or 30 km in total, with about 2-2.5 hours spent on the snowmobile. Due to the dramatic topography, a reduced speed is held during the initial parts of the tour, but when you reach the top point of the trail at the frozen lake of Finn, you can speed up and get your adrenaline pumping. If time and weather permit, you can also try out ice fishing on this lake. Fingers crossed that Mother Nature ‘flicks the switch’ and lights up the sky with the Aurora Borealis. At the end of the trip, enjoy a hot meal in the dining lavvu, before returning to the camp and retiring for the night.
Day 4 Husky Safari
A team of eager huskies is waiting to take you dog-sledding today. Begin by learning about training & grooming, then receive in-depth instruction about how to be a musher, driving a dog team. 2 persons share the driving of each sled, and you can swap drivers half way. Head out across white landscapes, through the beautiful Vassdalen valley (an approximate distance of 15km return). Upon returning to camp, transfer back to the hotel in Tromsø, with time at leisure. Overnight in your hotel.
