Svalbard or Spitsbergen means "the cold coasts" and was first mentioned in Icelandic texts in the 12th Century. It is a truly unique place of wild nature, glaciers & polar bears. Over 60% of Svalbard is a protected area, including 3 nature reserves, 6 national parks & 15 bird sanctuaries. Austfonna, the world's 3rd largest icecap, is here and has a glacier front of over 200 km.
After mid-May the snow quickly disappears. Small flowers start to appear along the mountainsides and the sounds of bird life replace the quiet of winter. You can hear glaciers calving, and see vast blue fjords filled with floating ice. This is summer time on Spitsbergen. The midnight sun makes it possible to explore Spitsbergen over long days and even into the night. Explore this astonishing place over 5 great days, with fantastic day excursions from your comfortable hotel base.

Day 1 Arrival Longyearbyen
On arrival make your own way to your hotel. Accommodation at Svalbard Hotell with daily breakfast. Time at leisure- relax and enjoy the town. Perhaps visit the Svalbard Museum, the North Pole Expedition Museum and the Svalbard Kirke, or browse the shops for a unique souvenir.
Day 2 Dog Sledding On Wheels
Husky dogs in the summer need just as much love, attention and exercise as in the winter so in Spitsbergen there is summer dog sledding on wheels, where the dogs pull you along in small wooden wagons. Meet your guide at the hotel then transfer to the dog kennel at Trappers Station, about 10 minutes from town at the foot of Breinosa Mountain. There you can greet 90 excited Huskies who are all eagerly waiting to take you on a trip. After a safety briefing and instructions you are off, with two people to a wagon so that whilst one is driving the other can enjoy the rich countryside of the arctic in summer. You can expect to see abundant arctic plant life and birds and reindeer in their natural habitat. After the tour help the guide settle the dogs back into the yard before enjoying lunch in a traditional trappers cabin, or outside if the weather is good.
Day 3 ATV Safari to Adventdalen.
Drive an ATV (all terrain vehicle) into the summery Svalbard landscape. Summer in the Arctic is short and hectic with rich animal and bird life, and it is not uncommon to see both deer and foxes. In the summer months from May to almost the end of August, there is daylight around the clock. This trip takes you into Adventdalen, a tundra environment rich with Arctic history and wildlife. We drive only on the roads to preserve this fragile ecosystem. We stop at several points, such as the old airport at Longyearbyen, one of the mines, and one of the mountain tops to catch the view over the valley and the fjord. We also stop at the Basecamp Trapper’s station and dog yard, where we learn about the hunting and trapping culture in the North, enjoy coffee and biscuits and talk to the Alaskan Huskies eager for your attention! No previous experience of driving an ATV is required but all drivers must have a valid drivers license.
Day 4 Fjord Safari to Pyramiden and Nordenskiold Glacier.
Join an exciting and speedy open boat fjord safari to the Russian ghost town of Pyramiden and the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier. Pyramiden was once one of the largest settlements on Svalbard, with about 1000 inhabitants, and a school, kindergarten, hotel, restaurant and various other facilities. In the late 90s the town was abandoned. All the buildings and many technical installations still remain, and inside the houses everything is as it was, so it is not difficult to imagine life here. After a guided tour we enjoy lunch before we head back to Longyearbyen. On our way back we drive up to the majestic Nordenskiöldbreen. The front of the glacier is one of the most spectacular on Svalbard.
