This short tour takes you from Reykjavik to the charming town of Akureyri, Iceland's 2nd city.  On a guided tour of the Lake Myvatn area visit the striking Godafoss waterfall,  marvel at views of pseudo-craters and the lava pillars at Dimmuborgir, experience the boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits at the geothermal area of Hverir, sample fresh Icelandic cuisine, luxuriate in the natural hot springs of the Myvatn Nature Baths and much more. In winter you can also hunt for the Northern lights each night!

Day 1: Arrival
On arrival in Reykjavik transfer by airport express bus to your hotel. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Reykjavik - Akureyri
In the morning make your own way from your hotel to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport (just 10 minutes from the downtown area) for the short flight to Akureyri, the capital of the north, where your guide will meet you on arrival. The town which is located less than 50 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, is a colourful city, easy to walk around, with a wide range of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Spend 2 nights in Akureyri.

Optional activities in Akureyri:

Akureyri Art and City Walk (2.5 - 3 hours). Visit some of Akureyri Local Artists and walk through their workshops, the Akureyri centre, visit handicraft stores with north Icelandic designs and products.  Stop at a small "retro" café to enjoy a local beverage!

Culinary Coastline and Countryside (5 hours).  Explore Akureyri's surroundings and meet local food producers, then sail to Hrísey Island. Join an exclusive gourmet tasting tour and discover the very best of local North Icelandic production. You will meet enthusiastic local food producers, farmers, fishermen and brewers that will share their gastronomic knowledge and passion with you and you will be able to taste fresh fish, beer, salted cod, beef, lamb and ice-cream.

Northern Lights Tour (2-3 hours Oct-Apr only) To go into dark, frozen winter night and observe an unbelievable display of colour, light and texture is like waking up in a fairy-tale full of mystery and magic. Experience dark Icelandic winter night, the Northern lights and a star bright sky. Please note: the Northern lights may be visible from October through April but can only be seen on a clear night. There is no guarantee of sightings.

Day 3: Lake Myvatn Sightseeing by Coach
Today pick up from your hotel for a fully guided coach tour, visiting all the highlights of the area, including Godafoss waterfall, on the way to Lake Myvatn. Continue to the pseudo-craters of Skutustadagigar and, from there, to the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles), a series of lava pillars and strange formations. You´ll stop at the warm underground river in Grjotagja rift, and a pay a visit to the geothermal area of Hverir with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Next, at the Krafla volcano area, you'll drive past the power station that harnesses pollution-free geothermal steam for the region. Then you'll explore the explosion crater, Viti, that was formed in 1724 in the Myvatnseldar eruption and enjoy the view over Leirhnjukur volcano. End the day at the calming Myvatn Nature Baths, for a relaxing visit to the completely natural pool of geothermal water situated in the middle of lava fields, with a great view over Lake Myvatn. Return to Akureyri in the afternoon.

Day 4: Akureyi to Reykjavik
This morning explore the town's shops, the Botanic Gardens or just relax. Then make your own way to Akureyri Airport for your afternoon flight back to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport. On arrival, make your own way to the Reykjavik Lights Hotel or similar for overnight. 

Day 5: Departure
Arrangements end with your transfer by airport express bus back to Keflavik Airport for your onward flight.

Departures: Daily year-round. No departures 21-24 and 29 December 2017. No domestic flights on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day
