South Greenland is an area offering many Arctic experiences, from iceberg-filled fjords to dramatic glaciers, archaeological remains from the Inuit and Viking settlers, and unique access to the pristine countryside.

This 6 or 8 day tour takes you to Qaqortoq, a small town with a thriving cultural scene, and the site of the unique Stone & Man sculptural project, which has transformed the town into an open air art gallery. Artists from all over Scandinavia have carved over 40 sculptures into the rock faces and boulders in the town. Qaqortoq offers visits to  Viking ruins such as Hvalsey Church ruin, which is mentioned in the Icelandic Sagas, and the wonderful hot springs of Unartoq, not to mention the amazing icebergs and glaciers found nearby. You will also visit Narsarsuaq, meaning ‘great plain’ in Greenlandic. Formerly a US airbase, it is now a small settlement with a huge diversity of experiences from iceberg cruises, to easy hikes in a nearby valley or perhaps a trek to the Inland Ice Cap. The area around Narsarsuaq is also Viking Country and there are numerous ancient remains from these early settlers.

Day 1 Copenhagen - Narsarsuaq
Air Greenland morning flight from Copenhagen to Narsarsuaq.  Meet your local destination guide at the pier and transfer to the hotel for check-in. After a welcome meeting, enjoy a guided town walk. Dinner at the hotel tonight.

Day  2 Narsarsuaq: Viking Ruins of Erik the Red or Qooroq Glacier
For today you can choose between a visit to the Viking ruins of Erik the Red or a cruise to the Qooroq Glacier:

Viking Ruins of Erik the Red:  We cross Erik's Fjord by boat and go ashore at the sheep breeding settlement of Qassiarsuk, situated on the very spot where Erik the Red settled in 985 AD and named his farm "Brattahlið". We visit the ruins of Erik's farm and Thorhildur's church, the first Christian church on the continent.

Qooroq Glacier: The Greenland Ice Cap produces 250 millions tonnes of ice every year, when icebergs break off the glaciers. Close to Narsarsuaq, the Qooroq Glacier fills the fjord with beautiful icebergs. We cruise between these icebergs and go as close to the calving glacier as possible. Here, we turn off the engine to enjoy a silence only disturbed by the creaking of the ice. Light refreshments are included.

Day 3 Narsarsuaq- Qaqortoq
This morning transfer from your hotel to the pier, then continue by boat through Eric's Fjord to Qaqortoq. Qaqortoq is the biggest town in South Greenland with a population of just over 3000. Situated near the big lake "Storesøen" with rising mountains as a backdrop, Qaqortoq is where many students come to study, and therefore the town is full of life for most of the year. Old colonial houses show the history of the town, with splendid views over the open sea. A town of contrasts. Accommodation at Hotel Qaqortoq. In the afternoon enjoy a guided walk of the town. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 4 Qaqortoq: By Boat to the Inland Ice Cap
Travel by boat to the fantastic Inland Ice Cap and the Twin Glaciers. Weather permitting, we go ashore very close to the glaciers. From this point you have the chance to see the Ice Cap from below, and feel the massive power of nature. The tour includes lunch.

Day 5: Qaqortoq: Hvalsey Fjord & Church Ruins
Today enjoy a guided tour into the beautiful Hvalsey Fjord around Arpatsivik Island to Hvalsey, where we visit the old Norse ruins as well as the church ruin, dating from the Norse period. A wedding in the church in 1408 is the last written evidence that we have from the Norse settlement in Greenland. Light refreshments are included.  Farewell dinner at your hotel tonight.

Day 6 Qaqortoq to Narsarsuaq
Breakfast at the hotel then transfer by helicopter back to Narsarsuaq. On arrival in Narsarsuaq, transfer to the airport for your Air Greenland midday flight from Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen Airport. (Please note you may travel back to Narsarsauq by boat if the weather is not favourable)
