The small town of Hveragerði is famous for geothermal heat- the town is built above a hot-spring field! Bubbling and hissing, the hot springs flow all year round, and create white plumes of steam that stretch to the sky. Trees grow all over Hveragerði, and create a green and verdant environment, in contrast to much of the rest of Iceland. Stay in Hveragerði and explore the wonders of this geologically new and fascinating area, and enjoy a guided excursion to the 3 sights of the Golden Circle - Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area.

Day 1: Keflavik Airport - Hveragerdi and Welcome Walk
From Keflavik International Airport, transfer to your hotel in Hveragerði (approximately 90 minutes drive) at either 08:00hrs  or 17:30hrs. Time at leisure in Hveragerði until this evening, when you meet your local guide at 20:30hrs, and take a walk around this charming town, to learn about its history, geology and culture from a local perspective. The walk includes a visit to the newest hot springs area, formed after a big earthquake in 2008, and see how the locals use this natural and free energy to boil an egg in one of them! You will also learn how Iceland uses geothermal energy for heating, in greenhouses, and for hot water.  4 nights in Hveragerði.

Day 2 Hveragerdi: Day at Leisure
Time to explore the unique features of this town. The local thermal bath is famous for its invigorating effects, and  is renowned for its lovely setting as well as the hot pots, whirlpool pot, sunlamps, and a natural steam bath, heated with steam coming directly from the ground.

Or visit the exhibition about the 2008 earthquake, to learn how it affected buildings, local environments and residents. Television screens show the recordings from surveillance cameras, photographs taken by the locals and information gathered from The Earthquake Engineering Research Centre. At the exhibition you can experience a powerful earthquake (+6 Richter) in an earthquake simulator and see the crack that was created in th quake, still visible in the floor.

You could also take a taxi to the nearby geothermal exhibition at Hellisheidi power plant, which explores the utilization of geothermal energy in Iceland. Renewable powere sources account for more than 70% of the total primary energy consumption in Iceland, far higher than anywhere else in the world, and this pwer plant is the largest geothermal district heating utility in the world. Guides at the exhibition explain how this amazing process operates.

Day 3 Golden Circle Classic
Today you will be picked up from your hotel for your Golden Circle Tour, to visit 3 of Iceland's iconic sights. First is the Thingvellir National Park, a remarkable historical and geological site, located by Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest lake in Iceland. The beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the meeting point of two of the earth's tectonic plates. Next stop is Gullfoss, a two-tiered waterfall where you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down into a deep canyon. Finally, visit the Geysir geothermal area where bubbling hot springs and geysers are abundant. Here you'll find Strokkur, the most active geyser in the area, spouting up to 25-30 metres every few minutes.

Day 4 Hveragerdi: Day at Leisure for Optional Excursions
