Icebergs, glaciers, hot springs and volcanoes are plentiful in Iceland, one of the geologically youngest and most active areas in the world. This tour gives you the perfect opportunity to witness and experience the marvels of Mother Nature in its purest form, while exploring the main attractions of South Iceland, including the beautiful  Westman Islands. Discover the magic of these wonders and magnificent natural landscapes surrounding them.

You can combine this tour with Mountains and Fjords to further enjoy Iceland - see our Absolute Iceland tour which shows this combined itinerary.

Day 1 Arrival in Reykjavik
On arrival in Reykjavik take the airport bus to your hotel for overnight in Reykjavík. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping and dining. It has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Museums include the National Museum, Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum (based around a 10thC, Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001), the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery.

Ingolfur Arnarson was the first settler of Iceland and he built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík (Smokey Bay), stands today. The town was named after the columns of steam rising from the hot springs in the area, which  made such a deep impression on the first settlers.

Day 2 Westman Islands
Waterfalls - Puffin Island - Magnificent lava fields
Monring departure from Reykjavik and our first stop is Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can walk behind the waterfall, as well as around it. Then travel along the farmlands of the south coast to Landeyjahofn harbour, from where we take the 30 minute ferry ride to the Westman Islands. The destination is Heimaey Island, the largest of the islands and the only inhabited one. Here we visit Storhofdi Point, with its fantastic views over the area. From  mid-May to the start of August, it is also possible to see puffins. Take a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only three decades ago, visit Eldheimar Museum and discover the flora growing in the new lava field. Afternoon at leisure, so you can explore the island on your own. Overnight in the Westman Islands.

Day 3 South Shore - Skogar - Vik
Powerful Volcanoes – Folk Museum – Black sand beaches
The morning ferry takes us from the Westman Islands back to the mainland and then we travel further along the southern shores, past numerous glacial rivers, en-route to Skogafoss waterfall. Visit Skogar Folk Museum's great collection of turf-roofed buildings and artifacts of daily, Icelandic life, from across the centuries. Onwards to the new Lava Centre - an interactive, educational and high-tech exhibition depicting earthquakes, volcanic activity and how Iceland was created over millions of years. Continue on to the black sands of Reynisfjara beach, where you can witness the powerful waves and amazing basalt column features carved by the power of the sea. Dinner and 2 nights in Vik area.

Day 4 Vik - Skaftafell - Jokulsarlon
Europe‘s largest Glacier – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs
Today we drive aross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the Earth, before reaching the small town Kirkjubaejarklaustur, the former site of a 12th century Catholic convent. Onwards to Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland's most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Continue to stunning Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to see floating icebergs and maybe a curious seal or two. Optional excursion: take a boat trip and sail between floating icebergs. Throughout the day, enjoy magnificent views of mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. 2nd  overnight in Vik area.

Day 5 Gullfoss – Geysir – Thingvellir – Reykjavik
Exploding Geysers - Beautiful Golden Falls - ational Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Today head for the Geysir hot spring area to see the famous great Geysir, as well as Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes. Travel onwards to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. The next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the Viking-age parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake.
