This 10 day/9 nights self-drive favourite explores Iceland's rich natural treasures, including national parks, beautiful waterfalls, striking glaciers, magnificent volcanoes and hot springs.

Additional nights can be added in Reykjavik at the end of the tour, or anywhere else already on the itinerary along the way.

Day 1  Keflavik Airport - Hvergerdi   100km
Geothermal Lagoon – Flower village – Geothermal Greenhouses
Pick up the car at the airport and start your Iceland experience.  From Keflavik International Airport drive the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula towards your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerdi, 45km south east of Reykjavik.The village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs it is often called the flower village. Overnight in Hveragerdi.

Day 2 Hveragerdi - Geysir - Thingvellir - Borgafjordur    310km
Greenhouses - Exploding Geysers - National Park with Geological Wonders - Massive Waterfall
Drive to the waterfall Gullfoss and the hot springs at Geysir. Visit Thingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament, before driving through Hvalfjordur fjord to Borgarfjordur. Overnight in Borgarfjordur area.

Day 3 Borgafjordur - Blondus - Varmahlid - Akureyri    280km
Fertile Farmlands - Glacial Rivers - Iceland's Second Largest City - Viking Horses
Drive north through Borgarfjordur to the shores of Hunafloi bay and the towering mountains and horse breeding valley of Skagafjordur. Continue to Akureyri, the capital of the north. Overnight in North Iceland.

Day 4 Akureyri - Lake Myvatn    100km
Botanical Garden - Museums - Waterfall "Of the Gods"
Spend the morning exploring the town of Akureyri. Continue your journey to the unique Lake Myvatn area. Overnight in North Iceland.

Day 5  Lake Myvatn    Variable Mileage
Bizarre Lava Formations - Geothermal Activity - Rich Birdlife
Explore the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn and surrounding area, including the mystical lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the volcanic area of Krafla along with the colourful sulfurous slopes of Namaskardpass. Overnight in North Iceland.

Day 6 Husavik - Tjornes - Dettifoss - Egilsstadir    310km
Whale Watching - Glacier Carved Gorge - Europe' Most Powerful Waterfall

Drive north to the fishing port of Husavik and around Tjornes peninsula. Visit Asbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon andJokulsargljufur National Park. Proceed to the mighty Dettifoss waterfall, before heading across the highland plateau to Egilsstadir in the east. Overnight in East Iceland.

Day 7 Reydarfjordur - Stodvarfjordur -  Djupivogur - Hofn    300km
Narrow Fjords - Steep Mountains - Picturesque Coastline - Mineral Collection

Drive south through the spectacular East Fjords, where towering mountains plunge vertically into the ocean. The journey continues to the town of Hofn in Hornafjordur, also known as the lobster capital of northern Europe. Overnight in North East Iceland

Day 8  Hofn - Skaftafell - Kirkjubaejarklaustur    200km
Europe's Largest Glacier - Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs - Europe's Largest National Park
Drive to the shimmering icebergs and still, milky waters of JokulsarlonGlacial Lagoon before continuing to Skaftafell National Park where a nature hike is recommended. Overnight in Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.

Day 9 Vik - Skogar - Reykjavik    260km
Lava Fields - Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore - Puffin Colony - Thundering Waterfalls
Drive along the spectacular south coast, a sweeping landscape of sandy deserts, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean. On to Reykjavík for overnight.

Day 10 Reykjavik - Keflavik Airport    52km
Your tour concludes with car drop-off at Keflavik International Airport.

*  Additional nights can be added in Reykjavik at the end or anywhere else already on the itinerary along the way.

* Choose from 3 different levels of accommodation:
Budget: standard rooms with shared facilities in budget hotels, farm houses and guesthouses
Economy: standard rooms with private shower/wc in simple hotels, farm houses and guesthouses with last night in 3 star hotel in Reykjavik
Comfort: standard rooms with private shower/wc in quality hotels and guesthouses with last night in 4 star hotel in Reykjavik
Please note:  for travel in peak season from June to August 2017 there is limited hotel availability.  Whilst every endeavour will be made to book the accommodation level requested, a mixture of accommodations only may be available.  If so, the final price for the tour would be adjusted accordingly.

* The first night of your tour is spent in the Hveragerdi area, a small town about 45km from Reykjavik, to enable you to then head off into the countryside the next day without having to go through Reykjavik.
 
* The names for individual accommodations are not available prior to booking, as the tour package is based on specific hotel/price categories and not on specific hotels/accommodations and the exact location of your hotel will vary according to availability. The itinerary indicates the region only for each overnight stay (with the exception of the last night which is always in Reykjavik itself)

* The price is based on  9 x 24-hour rental days starting at the time of car pick up and finishing at the same time. Additional use of the car beyond this time frame will incur additional days rental fee.

* We recommend a Group 2.0 car or higher- the price of the tour will vary according to the car category selected.

* The price shown is for a Group 2.0 car and Economy accommodation. For other car types and accommodation prices please enquire.

* You must be 21 years of age to rent any car, and 23 years of age to rent a car category 5.0 or higher and have a valid driver's license with photo ID ( an international driver's licence is not otherwise required) 

* The suggested route for this tour has ideas for sights  and activities but please note these are NOT included in the tour price
