Denmark is a land surrounded by the sea and this ancient maritime kingdom consists of over 400 islands. Explore Copenhagen, Odense on Funen Island, and Aero Island, on this short self drive circle tour from Copenhagen. Extra nights can be added in Copenhagen, or at any overnight destination along the way.

Day 1 Copenhagen Arrival
Upon arrival at Copenhagen Airport, collect your rental car then check-in at your hotel. Enjoy some of the many historical and fascinating sights & wander the Nyhavn quayside area for a beer and a taste of new Nordic cuisine at one of the many bars & restaurants.  Most of the city’s attractions are located near the city centre, including Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg & Christiansborg (the Danish Parliament) Palaces, Gefion Fountain, Nyhavn (old harbour), the Little Mermaid, Round Tower, museum of Carlsberg & various art, culture, history & design museums. A stroll along the pedestrian street of Strøget can also be a pleasant way to spend some time. Overnight in Copenhagen.

Day 2 Copenhagen - Odense, Funen Island 177km
Depart from Copenhagen and head westward through farming countryside and small villages, some of which were founded by Vikings more than 1,000 years ago. In Roskilde - until 1417, the capital of Denmark – visit the Viking Ship Museum, containing the remains of 5 Viking vessels, sunk more than 1,000 years ago to prevent aggressive intruders gaining access to the town from the sea. Also visit the Town Square, and twin-spired Roskilde Cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral was commenced during the 12th Century and additions have been made through the ages, in different architectural styles and the Cathedral is the traditional burial place of Danish monarchs and contains more than 40 royal graves. Continue from Roskilde to Halskov, then drive over one of the world’s largest off-shore suspension bridges, to the island of Funen. Continue to Odense, Denmark’s third largest city and Hans Christian Andersen’s home town. Overnight in Odense.

Day 3 Odense – Svendborg - Aero Island 89km
This morning drive south to Kværndrup and perhaps visit Egeskov Castle (please note on 03 and 04 June the castle is closed for the Heartland Festival), the best preserved water fortress in the world, with its rounded towers, double gables, red brick walls, green turrets and spires, built on a foundation of oak piles rammed into a bed of the lake more than 450 years ago. Visit the Great Hall which dates back to 1554 and 7 adjoining rooms, and enjoy the 40 acres of park with hundreds of aromatic plants and herbs. Continue to Svendborg to take the ferry to the island of Aero, where you will stay for 2 nights.

Day 4 Aero Day at Leisure
Day at leisure. Maybe rent a bike, visit one of the interesting museums showing the island’s maritime history, or simply relax in the idyllic charm of this small community. 2nd overnight on Aero.
