This tour allows you to see many of Iceland's main attractions. In the country's west, you have the chance to either continue along the Ring Road, or to traverse the uninhabited interior of Iceland via the Kjolur highland track. Additional nights can be added in Reykjavik at the end of the tour, or anywhere else already on the itinerary along the way.

DAY 1: Keflavík Airport – Hveragerði  100km
Geothermal Lagoon – Flower village – Geothermal Greenhouses

Pick up the car at the airport and start your Iceland experience.  From Keflavík International Airport we recommend driving the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula towards your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerði.  The village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs it is often called the flower village. Overnight in Hveragerði.

DAY 2: Thingvellir – Gullfoss – Geysir – South Shore  310km
Geological Wonders  – Exploding Geysers – Puffin Colony - Black Sand
Beaches of the South Shore
Today's highlights include Thingvellir National Park a place of great geological and historical interest, the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot-spring area. Drive along the south shore, viewing Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, the black sand beaches around Vík and Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Please note that Dyrhólaey is closed during nesting season – mid-May to late-June. Overnight in the Vik area. 

DAY 3: Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Skaftafell – Jökulsárlón – Höfn   270km
Lava Fields - Europe's Largest National Park - Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs - Europe's Largest Glacier

Drive through the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, explore Skaftafell National Park, a green oasis nestling below the great Vatnajökull glacier surrounded by black desert sands.  Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and onwards to the charming harbour town Höfn known as the lobster capital of northern Europe. Overnight in Hornafjordur area.

DAY 4: Höfn – Djúpivogur – Reyðarfjörður – Egilsstaðir  300km
Narrow Fjords – Steep Mountains – Picturesque Coastline – Mineral Collection

Drive along the rugged coastline of the East Fjords with their towering mountains and charming fishing villages. En route you may like to take a boat tour to Papey Island where thousands of puffins nest in the summer or visit Petra's famous collection of local stones and minerals at Stöðvarfjörður. Overnight in East Iceland.

DAY 5: Egilsstaðir – Dettifoss – Húsavík – Mývatn  310km
Highland Desert – Europe's Most Powerful Waterfall – Glacier Carved Gorge

Travel across Möðrudalsöræfi highlands renowned for their stark, untouched beauty towards Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall. Visit the magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi. Drive onwards to Tjörnes peninsula and the friendly Húsavík fishing port.  Overnight in North East Iceland.

DAY 6: Mývatn – Akureyri/Skagafjörður  130km
Bizarre Lava Formations – Geothermal & Volcanic Activity – Rich Birdlife – Waterfall 'Of the Gods'

Explore highlights of the Lake Mývatn area, including the mystical volcanic formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, the colorful sulfurous slopes of Námaskarð and Krafla volcanic area. En route to Akureyri visit Goðafoss waterfall.  Overnight in Eyjafjordur or Skagafjörður area. 

DAY 7: Varmahlíð – Reykholt – Borgarnes – Hvalfjörður – Reykjavík   490km
Fertile Farmlands - Glacial Rivers - Folk Museum - Scenic Fjord

Drive through historical Skagafjörður region, renowned for horse breeding. You may like to visit the old farmstead at Glaumbær, a great example of old Icelandic architecture. Continue to the bay of Húnaflói and across Holtavörðuheiði plateau, enter Borgarfjörður area. On to Reykjavík in the evening. Another option today is to travel across the barren Kjolur highland road, to the geothermal wilderness oasis at Hveravellir before driving to Reykjavik. If you choose to do this you must have a Group 5.0 or higher 4WD car - the track is open mid-June through August.  Overnight in Reykjavik.

DAY 8: Reykjavik - Keflavik Airport   52km
Your tour concludes with car drop-off at Keflavik International Airport.

Excludes:  petrol and optional tours - Blue Lagoon (Day 8); Snowmobile on Myrdalsjokull, Laugarvatn Fontana (Day 2); Glacier Hike, Jokulsarlon boat tour (Day 3); Dinner with the locals - Egilsstaðir (Day 4);  Whale Watching from Husavik (Day 5): these can be purchased locally.

Tour Notes:

* The first night of your tour is spent in the Hveragerdi area, a small town about 45km from Reykjavik, to enable you to then head off into the countryside the next day without having to go through Reykjavik.

*  Additional nights can be added in Reykjavik at the end or anywhere else already on the itinerary along the way.

* Choose from 3 different levels of accommodation:
Budget: standard rooms with shared facilities in budget hotels, farm houses and guesthouses
Economy: standard rooms with private facilites in standard hotels and guesthouses. Last night at 3 star hotel.
Comfort: standard rooms with private facilites in quality hotels and guesthouses or superior rooms in standard hotels and guesthouses. Last night in 4 star hotel.

* The names for individual accommodations are not available prior to booking, as the tour package is based on specific hotel/price categories and not on specific hotels/accommodations. The exact location of the countryside hotels will vary according to availability- the itinerary indicates the region for each overnight stay (with the exception of the last night which is always in Reykjavik itself).

* The price is based on 7 x 24-hour rental days starting at the time of car pick up and finishing at the same time. Additional use of the car beyond this time frame will incur additional days rental fee.

* The price shown is for a Group 2.0 car and Economy accommodation.

* You must be 21 years of age to rent any car, 23 years of age to rent a car category 5.0 or higher and have a valid driver's license with photo ID (an international driver's licence is not otherwise required)
