This self-drive circle tour from Tromso takes you to the very northernmost point of Europe, the North Cape, as well as Alta and Hammerfest. Add extra nights in Tromso or any other overnight destination.

Day 1 Arrival Tromso
On arrival at Tromso Airport pick-up your rental car. This university town has a lively atmosphere and friendly locals. Perhaps visit the Arctic Cathedral for it’s daring architecture, the Polaria Aquarium (don’t miss the Northern Lights & Spitsbergen Arctic Wilderness films), the Polar Museum to learn about the role Tromsø has played in Arctic exploration, and the MS Polstjerna, a well preserved sailing vessel from 1949. Take the short trip by cable car to Storsteinen Mountain, where you can enjoy the views of Tromsø and the surroundings. Accommodation at Thon Hotel Tromsø, or similar.

Day 2 Tromso - Alta 295 km
Today drive to Breivikeidet, for the ferry crossing towards Svensby, then further on for a second ferry crossing from Lyngseidet to Olderdalen, with tremendous views to the Lyngen Alps, some of Troms county’s most prominent and majestic mountains. This area is renowned for glaciers, deep valleys and high peaks which plunge directly into arctic seas. Due to the alpine nature of the mountain range and its unique wildlife, flora and fauna, the Lyngen Alps form a protected area in Norway. Continue through Lapland and arrive in Alta and time to explore - the long history of Alta dates back more than 7000 years,  when indigenous settlers created many fabulous rock carvings.  We suggest you visit Alta Museum for exhibitions and information about these fascinating  rock carvings. Close to the museum is the largest of the five open-air rock art sites in Alta, inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Accommodation at Thon Hotel Alta, or similar.

Day 3 Alta - North Cape 210 km
Drive north along “the Road of the Midnight sun”, over the wild Senna Land to Skaidi, for the final stage of your journey to the northernmost point of Europe - the North Cape.  Here, the Atlantic Ocean meets the Arctic Ocean and their frigid waters mix, and the only dry land between you and the North Pole is the Svalbard archipelago. The summer sun doesn’t set between the middle of May and the end of July. Drive along the Porsanger Fjord before arriving in Kåfjord. Continue through the tunnel to the little town of Honningsvåg. Time to explore this pleasant town with souvenir shops and Sami museums. From here the drive to the North Cape is approximately 45 minutes. In the evening light of the Midnight Sun drive to the North Cape and “Nordkapphallen” (North Cape Hall), where you can admire the Artic Ocean and visit the cinema, viewing platform and information centre. Accomodation at a Scandic Hotel in the area*.

Day 4 North Cape - Hammerfest 220 km
This morning continue to Hammerfest. We recommend a visit to the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society and the Hammerfest mountain “Salen”, which offers an impressive view over the bay and the surrounding islands and Seiland. The viewpoint can be reached hiking or by car. Or visit the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 km, established by the German-born Russian scientist Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve in the years 1816 to 1855 to establish the exact size and shape of the earth. Measurement of the triangulation chain comprises 258 main triangles and 265 geodetic vertices. The northernmost point is located near Hammerfest in Norway and the southernmost point near the Black Sea in Ukraine. Accommodation at Thon Hotel Hammerfest, or similar.

Day 5 Hammerfest - Sorkjosen 315 km
Today drive south and pass Alta once more, on your route towards Sørkjosen and enjoy a stroll in this relaxing small village with pretty harbour. . Accommodation at Reisafjord Hotel, or similar.

Day 6 Sorkjosen - Tromso 235 km
