This circle self drive tour takes you from the town of Tromso to the Vesterdalen and Lofoten Islands, into the arctic Norwegian north and to the North Cape, the world's most northerly mainland point, then back to Tromso.  Extra nights can be added in Tromso or at any overnight destination along the way.

If you have only limited time take a look at our Tromso and Lofoten Islands tour which is Days 1-5 only of this tour.

Day 1 Tromso Arrival
On arrrival at Tromsø Airport, pick-up your rental car and drive into town. Tromsø is the principal city of northern Norway and known as the Gateway to the Arctic. There are some great museums focusing on regional art, Sami culture and history, and polar  exploration and science. We recommend a short trip by cable car up Storsteinen Mountain, where you can enjoy the view of Tromsø and the surroundings. Also worth a visit is the magnificent Arctic Cathedral, a masterpiece of modern architecture. Overnight in Tromso.

Day 2 Tromso - The Vesteralen Islands - Harstad  305km
Drive along the shores of the Bals fjord and take the road to the Vesterålen Islands. Or you can  take an alternative road on the shores of the Asta Fjord. Arrive in Harstad, the capital of the Vesterålen Islands, and a great base for exploring the archipelago. As well as the surrounding natural beauty, the city offers a wide range of cultural events including  the North Norwegian Festival of Culture in June. Overnight in Harstad.

Day 3 Harstad - Lofoten Islands - Svolvaer 205km
Drive to Sortland and continue by ferry from Melbu to Fiskebøl, to arrive in the Lofoten Islands. These islands offer some of the most breath-taking scenery in Norway - towering, pointed mountain peaks rise majestically from the sea to a height of almost 1,000 metres, many of the island interiors are swathed in emerald green, and the shorelines are fringed with white sandy beaches. Visit  some of the charming villages such as Stamsund and Reine. Overnight in the islands.

Day 4 Svolvaer - Skutvik - Narvik 140km
Explore more of the Lofoten Islands, before heading back towards the mainland. From June to August, take the ferry from Svolvær to Skutvik, crossing the West Fjord (Vestfjorden) then continue by road to Bognes (in May, September and October take the ferry from Lodingen to Bognes). From Bognes take the ferry across the Lysfjorden to Skarberget. Lysfjorden is the home of a large colony of killer whales, while sea eagles rule on Skarberget, a mountain plunging directly into the sea, so you may see some unique Norwegian wildlife on this crossing. Drive on to Narvik, which lies on a peninsula between the Beisfjord and the Rombaksfjord, at the foot of the 1,200 metre high Fagernes Mountain. Here you can take the cable car up the mountain, visit the Ofoten Museum or one of the region's varied collection of 2nd World War memorials and museums. Overnight in Narvik.

Day 5 Narvik - Sorkjosen 340km
Start today on the route towards Arctic Norway. The road follows the shores of the impressive Lyngen fjord, before arriving at Sørkjosen, near Storslett. Overnight in Sorkjosen.

Day 6  Sorkjosen - Hammerfest 315km
Continue to Hammerfest, the northernmost town of the European mainland. Here perhaps visit  the Museum of Reconstruction, with exhibits of before and after the Second World War - explore an authentic refugee cave, a barrack kitchen, and a post-war permanent house. Hammerfest, because of its geographical position, has had a strong relationship with arctic wildlife and the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society works for the preservation of this tradition, collecting and preserving artifacts of historical and scientific interest. Overnight in Hammerfest.

Day 7 Hammerfest - North Cape 220km
Drive to the North Cape along the shores of the Porsangen fjord. North Cape is the world’s most northerly mainland point, and here on a clear summer night, you can enjoy the midnight sun on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. Visit  Nordkapphallen, where there is an excellent exhibition and presentation concerning the North Cape. Overnight in the area.

Day 8 North Cape - Alta 210km
Continue on towards the South. You can take an extension of the route to Lakselv or to the Stabbursdalen National Park on the way to Alta. Once in Alta, we recommend a visit to the Alta Museum, where the rock art is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Overnight in Alta.

Day 9 Alta - Tromso 295km
Drive to Olderdalen and take a ferry across the Lyngen fjord to Lyngseidet, then after a short drive another ferry from Svensby to Breivikeidet. Arrive back in Tromsø for overnight.
