Day 1:  TROMSØ Arrival
On your arrival at Tromso airport, pick-up your rental car and drive into town. Tromsø is the principal city of northern Norway and known as the Gateway to the Arctic. There are some great museums focusing on regional art, Sami culture and history, and polar  exploration and science. We recommend a short trip by cable car up Storsteinen Mountain, where you can enjoy the view of Tromsø and the surroundings. Also worth a visit is the magnificent Arctic Cathedral, a masterpiece of modern architecture. Overnight in Tromso at Thon Hotel Tromso or similar.

Day 2:  TROMSØ – THE VESTERÅLEN ISLANDS – HARSTAD (305 KM)
Drive along the shores of the Bals fjord and take the road  to the Vesterålen Islands. Or you can  take an alternative road on the shores of the Asta Fjord. Arrive in Harstad, the capital of the Vesterålen Islands, and a great base for exploring the archipelago. As well as the surrounding natural beauty, the city offers a wide range of cultural events including  the North Norwegian Festival of Culture in June. Overnight in Harstad at the Thon  Hotel Harstad or similar.

Day 3:        HARSTAD – THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS – SVOLVÆR (205 KM)
Drive to Sortland and continue by ferry from Melbu to Fiskebøl before you arrive in the Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Islands offer some of the most breath-taking scenery in the country - towering, pointed mountain peaks rise majestically from the sea to a height of almost 1 000 metres; many of the island interiors are swathed in emerald green, and the shorelines are fringed with white sandy beaches. Visit  some of the charming villages such as Stamsund and Reine. Overnight in Svolvær at Thon Hotel Lofoten or similar.

Day 4:        SVOLVÆR – SKUTVIK - NARVIK (140 KM)
Explore more of the Lofoten Islands, before heading back towards the mainland. Take the ferry from Svolvær to Skutvik, crossing the West Fjord (Vestfjorden), and continue by car to Bognes for the ferry across Lysfjorden to Skarberget. Lysfjorden is the home of a big colony of killer whales while sea eagles rule Skarberget, a mountain diving directly into the sea, so with a little bit of luck this short cruise will show you a unique part of Norwegian nature. Drive on to Narvik, which lies on a peninsula between the Beisfjord and the Rombaksfjord, at the foot of the 1200 metre high Fagernes Mountain. Take the cable car up the mountain,  visit the Lofoten Museum or one of the region's varied collection of 2nd World War memorials and museums. Overnight in Narvik at Quality Hotel Grand Royal or similar.

Day 5:        NARVIK - SØRKJOSEN (340 KM)
Start on the route towards Arctic Norway. The road follows the shores of the impressive Lyngen fjord, before arriving at Sørkjosen, near Storslett. Overnight at Sorkjosen at Reisafjord Hotel or similar.

Day 6:        SØRKJOSEN – HAMMERFEST (315 KM)
Continue to Hammerfest. Here visit  the Museum of Reconstruction, with exhibits of before and after the Second World War. Walk in an authentic refugee cave, a barrack kitchen, and a post-war permanent house. Hammerfest, because of its geographical position, has had a strong relationship with arctic wildlife and the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society works for  the preservation of this tradition, collecting and preserving artifacts of historical and scientific interest. Overnight in Hammerfest at Thon Hotel Hammerfest or similar.

Day 7:        HAMMERFEST – THE NORTH CAPE (220 KM)
Drive to the North Cape along the shores of the Porsangen fjord. North Cape is the world’s most northerly mainland point, and here on a clear summer night, you can enjoy the mid-night sun on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. Visit  Nordkapphallen, where there is an excellent exhibition and presentation concerning the North Cape. Overnight in the area.

Day 8:        THE NORTH CAPE – ALTA (210 KM)
Continue on towards the South. You can take an extension of the route to Lakselv or to the Stabbursdalen National Park on the way to Alta. Once in Alta, we recommend a visit to the Alta Museum, where the rock art is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Overnight in Alta at Thon Hotel Alta or similar.

Day 9:        ALTA –TROMSØ (295 KM)
Drive to Olderdalen and take a ferry across the Lyngen fjord to Lyngseidet, then after a short drive another ferry from Svensby to Breivikeidet. Arrive back in Tromsø for overnight at Thon Hotel Tromso or similar.
