In 2007, the Faroe Islands were honoured by National Geographic as the worlds’ best archipelago. The islands offer a  unique experience - unspoiled natural beauty with rolling green hills, stark cliffs and breathtaking views, abundant birdlife, and an independent people with a very strong tradition and cultural identity. 

This leisurely tour allows you to fully explore the Faroe Islands with a rental car so you can travel at your own pace. The uncluttered roads, many tunnels and short distances make driving in the islands easy. On some days you will enjoy excursions with local guides, enabling you to learn more about this fascinating and special place. Travel by ferry between the islands as outlined in the itinerary is included.  Self drive tours of 6, 7 or 8 days also available.

Day 1 Copenhagen - Vagar, Faroe Islands
Make your own way to Copenhagen airport for your flight to the Faroe Islands. On arrival at Vágar Airport  pick up your rental car and drive to the village of Gásadalur, which was the last village to be connected to the rest of the islands by tunnel. Enjoy the quiet and breathtaking view of Tindhólmur, a tiny island with 5 black peaks jutting majestically out from the sea. 2 nights on the island of Vágar.

Day 2 Vagar: Day at Leisure 
Day on your your own or perhaps take an optional excursion to the island of Mykines, the most western of the Faroe Islands with it's lovely small village. Where you will pass by majestic sea cliffs, and spot puffins, charming little birds with a colourful red beak, or gannets, which breed on the isolated isle to the west of the main island.  2nd night in Vágar. 

Day 3 Vagar - Suðuroy
From Vagar drive to Tórshavn, and from there take the ferry to the island of Suðuroy. The southern most of the islands, Suduroy is quite different not only geographically but also in terms of culture and language. The back of Suðuroy faces west towards the mighty Atlantic Ocean whilst its fjords and coves open towards the morning sun. The entire west coast is made up of sheer bird cliffs, broken only by four fjords at Hvalba, Lopra and Vágur. In the town of Tvøroyri you can visit the local tourist office for information about walks and have a look at some of the historic buildings that were used by the Danish Royal Company Store or enjoy a cup of coffee in the cosy cafe Pubbin which is located close to the ocean.  2 nights on Suðuroy. 

Day 4 Suðuroy: Guided Day Tour
This morning you will be picked up at your accommodation by your local driver/guide who will show you around more of this very special island, which has a rich history and some amazing and unforgettable views and vistas. Your exact route is determined by wind and weather. Lunch is enjoyed en route, then return to your hotel for your second night on Suðuroy.

Day 5 Suðuroy - Torshavn
Travel back on the ferry to Tórshavn, then time to explore the largest town on the islands and the capital city. Perhaps take a walk through Tórshavns old city quarter, Tinganes, with it's charming old timber houses and the parliamentary buildings. Or walk through the delightful quarter of Reyn, between small houses with grass roofs.  2 nights in Tórshavn.

Day 6 Torshavn: Day Trip to Nolsoy
This morning travel by ferry to the island of Nólsoy. Here life moves at its own pace, with quiet, peace and few cars. Today your local guide will share some myths and stories with you and show you the boat that Rowing Ove, a local hero, is said to have rowed alone from the Faroe Islands to the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the afternoon perhaps visit the village of Kirkjubøur, which is the Faroe Islands’ cultural centre. Then return by ferry to Torshavn for your second overnight.

Day 7 Torshavn - Northern Isles: Vestmanna Bird Cliffs
Today drive from Torshavn to the village of Vestmanna for your day excursion to the bird cliffs. From the village sail to the fantastic bird cliffs, passing between dramatic rock formations and through some sea caves and grottoes. After the excursion continue towards the northern islands, which offer dramatic landscapes. Continue on to the island of Viðoy - the most northerly village of Viðareiði is worth a visit. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a slice of bread at the local restaurant. Spend the next 2 nights in the Northern Islands.

Day 8 Northern Isles: Day Trip to Kalsoy
Today take the ferry from Klaksvík to the island of Kalsoy, popularly called the Recorder because of the 12 kilometre long road that winds through four tunnels and connects the islands four villages. Perhaps take a optional guided walk to Lighthouse Kallin. Make a stop at the village of Mikladalur which is known for its artists and sagas. By the ocean you can see the beautiful sculpture of the Seal Woman, and this is definitely worth a visit. Also visit the village of Trøllanes far to the north. 2nd night in the Northern Islands.

Day 9 Northern Isles - Eysturoy
Drive to the village of Gjógv and let the day develop on its own. The village is known for its unique natural harbour and a beautiful view of the island of Kalsoy. Or you might walk to the majestic valley of Ambadalur - walking maps can be purchased at the accommodations in the village. Spend the next 2 nights on Eysturoy.

Day 10 Eysturoy
Visit some of the adjacent villages, for example Oyndarfjørður to see the Rocking Stones, which according to legend are two enchanted pirate ships that lie rocking calmly. Continue to the village of Runavík and visit the local tourist office for information and visiting hours for the charming Vicarage in the village of Nes. The yarn store Navia is situated in the village of Toftir and has a large selection of Faroese sweaters, yarn, wool, and knits. Or in the village of Søldafjørður, you may like to book an optional private visit to a Faroese home where you can enjoy coffee/cake or dinner (this must be pre-booked).  2nd night in Eysturoy.

Day 11 Eysturoy - Vagar - Copenhagen
North of the village of Eiði the rock formations, the Giant and the Witch can be seen. According to legend, they are a couple who, in attempting to move the islands to Iceland, were turned to stone. En route to the airport, pass by the Faroe Islands’ highest mountain, Slættartindur at 882 metres high. Drive to Vagar Airport, return your rental car and fly to Copenhagen. On arrival in Copenhagen airport, your tour arrangements end.

Arrangements and costs may differ based on dates of travel. You can also take the tour from/to any other Atlantic Airway cities on the route network, days of departure and price may alter.
