Experience the Faroe Islands in winter and enjoy the best that nature offers, with constantly changing weather, beautiful sunny days, fascinating scenery, foaming seas, waterfalls and streams. Snowfalls occur, but they are short-lived; the Gulf Stream encircles the islands and tempers the climate, so the harbours never freeze and winter temperatures are moderate. At night, you only have to step outside to seek the fabled Northern Lights!

Day 1 Copenhagen - Vagar, Faroe Islands
Make your own way to Copenhagen airport for your flight to the Faroe Islands. On arrival at Vágar airport, pick up your rental car and drive to your accommodation on Vágar. 2 nights on Vágar.

Day 2 Vagar:  Pretty Villages, Lakes and waterfalls
Start exploring, discovering the magical scenery and pretty villages in all colours of the rainbow on this little island in the North Atlantic. Visit the unique village of Gásadalur, one of the most photographed places on the Faroes, with its attractive waterfall. Make sure you see Bøur village, which has a fantastic view of Tindhólm. If the weather permits,  you could take a bracing walk to the largest lake called Leitisvatn and then out to the Bøsdalafossur waterfall. From here, you can see the dramatic western side of the island. And drive from the village of Sandavágur out towards the impressive rock formation known as the ‘Witch’s Finger’. 2nd  night on Vagar.

Day 3 Vagar - Torshavn: Saksun and Tjørnuvík, Streymoy and Eysturoy
Today drive through the sub-sea tunnel to the island of Streymoy. We suggest driving to the remote villages of Saksun and Tjørnuvík, both of which offer wonderful photo motifs. Saksun is a picturesque village where the bay used to be a naturally protected harbour, but today the entrance is blocked by sand. When the tide is low, you can walk out to the sea. Cross the bridge that connects Streymoy and Eysturoy and continue towards the village of Tjørnuvík, surrounded by sheer mountains and with a unique view out to the rock formations the Giant and the Witch. Pass the impressive waterfall of Fossa then continue to Tórshavn, where you will stay for 3 nights.

Day 4  Tórshavn: Mountain and Island Views
Today perhaps drive over the mountain road ‘Oyggjarvegur’ to enjoy the views across the world’s smallest capital and the nearby island of Nólsoy. Continue to the mountains of Sornfelli (547m) and Norðadalsskarð (277m) to soak up the calm, the views and the amazing winter landscape.

Back in Tórshavn, maybe visit the art museum close to the park - the permanent collection has a wide variety of Faroese art, and shows how nature and the landscape have been the dominant motifs throughout Faroese art history. From there, it is not far to Nordic House, the most important cultural institution in the Faroe Islands, helping to preserve and promote Nordic and Faroese culture.

Or visit the National  Museum which contains discoveries from the ancient Vikings, and the famous Kirkjubø chairs that were part of the furnishings of the Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur.

Day 5 Torshavn: Day at Leisure
Exploring Tórshavn will give you many great photo opportunities, as you wander through the old part of town, between small black houses with grass roofs, called Reyn and Tinganes.  Visit the Cathedral and pretty Vágsbotn harbour where you will find plenty of places to eat. Make sure that you visit Kirkjubøur, the historical and cultural centre of the Faroe Islands. Here you will find the picturesque Kongsgarð, where the current ‘King’s Yeoman’ is the 17th generation in a row. See the unfinished St. Magnus Cathedral and the little Medieval church.
