For centuries, the interior of Iceland was virtually inaccessible, playing host only to outlaws in hiding. Via the mountain roads Kjölur and Sprengisandur, this untouched wilderness of Iceland's mountainous centre is now open. The highlands are a, vast, untamed land of rocky deserts, jagged peaks, volcanoes, ice caps, valleys, and hot springs. This tour combines a winter wilderness adventure into the highlands, with comfortable accommodation.

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik
On arrival in Reykjavik transfer by coach to your hotel. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery.Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Geysir - Gullfoss - Kerlingarfjoll Mountain Range
Depart Reykjavík and head for the geothermal fields of Geysir, with bubbling mud pools and the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring. Onwards to visit the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade. Then head for the highlands, to Kerlingarfjoll mountain range, located in the shadow of Hofsjökull glacier near the Kjölur highland road in Iceland’s highland interior region. enjoy an Depending on conditions, afternoon walk in the area. Overnight stay at Kerlingarfjoll (2 nights here).

Day 3: Kerlingarfjoll
The astonishing highland scenery includes majestic mountains, deep canyons, highly active geothermal fields and glistening glaciers. During winter time this is an ideal location for seeing the Northern Lights, as there is no light pollution from towns or cities in these mountain ranges. Today enjoy outdoor activities in the surroundings- the exact programme will depend on the weather conditions, but there should be the opportunity for both hiking and snowshoe walking, and possibly a short optional snowmobile ride. Overnight stay at Kerlingarfjoll.

Day 4: Kerlingarfjoll - Secret Lagoon - Reykjavik
Depart Kerlingarfjöll and head back along the Kjolur highland route. Once on the main road, head for the village Fludir for a visit to the Secret Lagoon natural hot spring. The pool’s natural surroundings and steam rising into the air gives the place a magical feeling and the warm water stays at 38-40 Celsius all year. A wonderful opportunity for a relaxing bath before heading back to Reykjavik. Overnight stay in Reykjavik.
