On this Escorted or Independent tour explore the amazing highlights of West Greenland - the awe inspiring Inland Ice Cap at Kangerlussuaq, the charming capital of Nuuk, and Ilulissat, with the world famous ice fjord. Travelling by air and by coastal ferry along the west coast of Greenland, enjoy a magical tour of discovery of this vast, intriguing land.

You can take this tour as a Fully Escorted Small Group tour on 07 and 28 June; 12 July and 02 August 2018 or as an Independent Tour on 21 June; 05 or 19 July and 09 August 2018.

Day 1 Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq: Optional Inland Ice Cap Excursion
Make your own way to Copenhagen International Airport for your flight to Kangerlussuaq. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and check in. If you have purchased the optional 3 Excursion Package (see details below), this afternoon start your exploration of West Greenland with your first optional excursion, a visit to the impressive Ice Cap, the second largest ice sheet in the world and covering 80% of Greenland (and equivalent to 40 times the area of Denmark!). It is a truly unique experience to look at this enormous field of ice and feel the forces of nature. Along the way, we pass the spectacular Russell Glacier – another breathtaking sight with its vertical ice wall of up to 60 metres.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at the Rowing Club, beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Ferguson approximately 5 kilometres outside Kangerlussuaq.

Day 2 Kangerlussuaq – Nuuk: City Sightseeing and Board the Coastal Ferry
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk. On arrival in Nuuk, enjoy a short sightseeing tour; the landmark of the city, Sermitsiaq Mountain, creates a majestic back drop and the fantastic surrounding fjord system provides an incredible setting for this small city. During the city tour, we visit the Greenland National Museum, the beautiful arts centre of Katauaq, with a façade shaped like the northern lights, and the historic old colonial harbour area. The afternoon is free for you to explore Nuuk on your own.

Late in the afternooon, transfer to the pier to board the coastal ferry, heading towards Ilulissat. On board, relax and marvel at the passing scenery, from the indoor panoramic lounge located at the rear of the vessel, or from one of the many outdoor areas on deck. The cruising speed is leisurely, allowing you to unwind and enjoy the changing landscapes. Overnight on board.

Day 3 Maniitsoq  -  Kangaamiut - Sisimiut
During the morning the ferry makes short stops at Maniitsoq and Kangaamiut;  you stay on board and watch the activity in the dock and harbour from on deck. Later this evening, the ferry arrives in Sisimiut, the second largest city in Greenland with more than 5,000 inhabitants, and a  place where the vivid colours of the houses provide a stunning contrast to the undulating rocky background. Enjoy a guided tour of the city - we visit the town hall, the highest vantage point, and the homely old district with its original colonial buildings, before re-boarding to  continue northwards. 2nd overnight on board.

Day 4  Disembark and Ilulissat Ice Fjord
As we approach Ilulissat, we start to see the extraordinary icebergs of Disko Bay, varying in size from small lumps of ice to huge, towering masses.  On arrival into Ilulissat, disembark and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of the town, for an introduction to the history and culture of the area and viewing of the museum, the old colonial houses, the beautiful and simple Zion's Church and the lively harbour. 4 nights in Ilulissat.

Day 5 Ilulissat: Day at Leisure Optional Midnight Icebergs Cruise
Ilulissat has dramatic views of the World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord and is a place where you can experience traditional Inuit culture, combined with modern life north of the Polar Circle. Today you can join an optional walking excursion to Sermermiut, an old settlement right at the mouth of the Icefjord, where giant icebergs have stranded on an old moraine. You can also join an optional husky kennel visit and lecture about life as a sled dog – highly relevant in a town where thousands of these dogs live and work - and meet the happy, charming puppies!  This evening, if you have purchased the optional 3 Excursion Package (see details below), your second optional excursion is a wonderful midnight cruise between the icebergs, that is guaranteed to take your breath away. The midnight sun sits low on the horizon, and creates reflections from the soft, warm light, giving the icebergs and mountain tops an orange tinge, and the water becomes almost purple.

Day 6 Ilulissat: Day at Leisure & Optional Whale Safari
Continue your exploration of Ilulissat on your own, or if you have purchased the optional 3 Excursion Package (see details below), your third optional excursion is a Whale Watching Safari. In the waters of Greenland, over 15 species of whale can be seen, including humpback whale, minke whale and fin whale. The whales swim around the entire Disko Bay throughout the summer, sometimes near the town, at  other times in the Ice Fjord or even up north by the Crown Prince Islands. Your vessel will take you to wherever the whales are, so that hopefully you can get close to these magnificent and majestic animals.

Day 7 Ilulissat: Day at Leisure
Enjoy your last day in Ilulissat. You may wish to book an optional helicopter trip which takes you across the Ice Fjord and its giant icebergs at low altitude; the view of the 7 kilometre wide glacier edge and the roaring silence provide an experience of grand proportions.

Or learn about the explorer Knud Rasmussen at the local museum, do some shopping for unique souvenirs in the high street stores, and relax at one of the cafés. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in the restaurant at your hotel - and a final sight of the midnight sun glowing above the Ice Fjord.

Day 8 Ilulissat -  Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen
Today transfer to the airport for the return flight to Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq. On arrival into Copenhagen Airport in the evening, your tour arrangements end.
