Experience the Northern Lights in the outermost regions of Norway and Finland. This small group escorted tour takes you from Saariselka in Finland, into Norway, down to Alta and on to Tromsø. In these areas, far from artificial lights, you will have the best chances of hunting for the Northern Lights! Along the way also enjoy some great fun with a variety of optional winter activities including dog sledding, overnight in a snow hotel, snowmobiling and much more.

Prior to the start of the tour, you can add an overnight stay in a glass igloo at Star Arctic Hotel - see below.

Day 1 Arrival in Saariselka, Finland
On arrival at Ivalo Airport make you own way to your hotel in Saariselka. The remainder of the day is free. The village is located in a fell area by the Urho Kekkonen National Park, with big forests making way for summits that offer incredible views of infinite landscape. Saariselkä village has about 350 inhabitants, making it one of the most authentic in Lapland, and the region has one of the largest Sámi communities in Finland. In the evening, attend a welcome dinner with your fellow travellers and guide. Overnight in Saariselka.

Day 2 Saariselka: Day for optional winter fun and Evening Northern Lights Hunt by Snowmobile Sled.
Today explore the town or choose from one of the great optional excursions available- these include reindeer, dog sledding or snowmobile safaris. This evening, enjoy a hunt for the Northern Lights, sitting cosily in  a snowmobile drawn sled, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. You will travel to the nearby fell district, through the lovely night fell scenery, and if the sky is clear maybe you might see the fabled lights! Overnight in Saariselka.

Day 3 Saariselka - Inari- Karasjok: Sami Culture
Morning departure by private coach to Inari, where we stop for a visit to the Siida Musuem (entrance included). The museum is the National Museum of Sami Culture, and proudly showcases the spiritual and material culture of the Finnish Sámi in its collections. Then we continue north west, crossing the border into Norway, before arriving at Karasjok, the Norwegian Sami capital, and home to the Sami Parliament and library, Sami Radio and the wonderful Sami Museum and theme park. Overnight in Karasjok.

Day 4 Karasjok - Honningsvag - North Cape
Today we continue north, bound for the famed North Cape. Travelling via  the North Cape Tunnel, we reach Mageroya Island on which the Cape is situated, before visiting the Cape itself. From the Cape's large, flat plateau, on top of a 307-metre high cliff, you can stand and take in the spectacular vista of the Barents Sea to the north. You can also explore the visitor centre with it's panoramic views, café, restaurant, post office, souvenir shop, and cinema. Overnight and dinner at Honningsvag.

Day 5 Honningsvag - Alta; Optional overnight in Snow Igloo
Today we head south, travelling along the Porsanger Fjord to Alta, the "Northern Lights city of Norway”. In the afternoon, visit the Alta Museum to see the expositions about the local history of the northern lights and local industry and culture. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Alta.

Tonight you can add an optional overnight stay  at the amazing Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, which is constructed and decorated each winter entirely with local snow and ice! The Hotel is located at Sorrisniva, about 20 km from Alta, in idyllic surroundings on the banks of the Alta River. The first Igloo Hotel was built in 2000 and every year the theme and construction changes.  Everything is made of snow and ice, the rooms, the beds, even the glasses in the bar. The surfaces are decorated with ice sculptures and friezes, beautiful artwork created by talented local artists. Along with the pure white snow it creates a fairytale atmosphere inside. The hotel has approximately 30 rooms, suites, ice gallery, and an ice-chapel. The temperatures inside the snow igloos remains constant between minus 4 and minus 7. Thanks to natural reindeer-hides, mattresses and sleeping-bags that keep you warm, you will have a very special and comfortable night. Your bags are stored safely during your stay as the ice rooms contain only your beds, while other facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, showers and sauna are in the adjacent warm service building to ensure your complete comfort. After this very special experience, rejoin your fellow guests after breakfast at the Igloo Hotel.

Day 6 Alta - Tromso; Evening Northern Lights Safari by Coach
This morning we leave Alta and drive along the Arctic Fjords to Tromso. Tromsø is a university town with a lively atmosphere and friendly locals and some wonderful attractions - the Arctic Cathedral with daring architecture, the Polaria Aquarium (don’t miss the Northern Lights & Spitsbergen Arctic Wilderness films), the Polar Museum where you can learn about the role Tromsø has played in Arctic exploration, and the MS Polstjerna, a well preserved sailing vessel from 1949.

Time at leisure to enjoy Tromso before our evening 4 hour guided Northern Lights Safari. The area we visit (depending on weather) may include Kvaløya Island, with its 1,000 metre high mountain, which protects Tromsø from the furious Atlantic Ocean, and its dramatic coastline with stunning alpine peaks and beautiful fjords. A light dinner will be enjoyed tonight as part of the safari. Overnight in Tromso.

Day 7 Tromso Day at Leisure
Day at leisure. Today is your chance to experience some fantastic outdoor winter fun with some great optional excursions out of Tromso. Try a Reindeer Safari - reindeer are the earliest form of transport in the land and an essential part of local traditional life. On your 4 hour reindeer safari, meet the reindeer herder and learn about the many fascinating aspects of life above the Arctic Circle, before heading off cosily wrapped in blankets on a wooden sleigh. Or try the Husky Safari, an exhilarating 4 hour shared dog-sled ride into the valleys and forests.  Enjoy the thrill of the almost silent whish of the sled as these hard working dogs run across the snow, before a well earned break for a homemade lunch around an open fire. Overnight in Tromso.
