With easy access to the inland ice cap, Kangerlussuaq offers some extraordinary experiences. The village’s location approximately 160km inland from the coast makes it one of the most weather stable destinations in Greenland, with lots of sunshine. Enjoy exploring the Ice Cap and the Russell Glacer, and (from late September to November) search for the fabled Northern Lights.

Then travel to Sisimiut, uniquely situated just 40km north of the Arctic Circle, and the northern most town in Greenland, with an ice-free harbour even in the winter months. With 5400 inhabitants, Sisimiut is the second-largest town in Greenlandic, and it has been a settlement for 4500 years. The quaint old part of the town contains houses dating from colonial Danish settlement in 1756. Here you will enjoy a Sea Safari, as well as a Cultural and Historical Walk.

Day 1 Copenhagen – Kangerlussuaq
Make your own way to Copenhagen Airport for your flight to Kangerlussuaq.  As the aircraft approaches Greenland, the sight of Nunataks or glacial islands and the enormous icy desert give a tantalising glimpse of what awaits you! Kangerlussuaq welcomes you with a blast of fresh coldness.  A local guide will meet you upon arrival and help you to check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq, just next to the airport complex, with stunning scenery including views of the steep Mt. Hassel. After check-in, your guide will give you further information about the next few exciting days and your excursions.  Then enjoy a guided tour of the old American airbase and the village, giving you an insight into the area's fascinating history and the natural environment.  3 nights in Kangerlussuaq.

Day 2  Inland Ice Cap &  (25 Sep to 20 Nov departures only) Northern Lights Hunt
The area around Kangerlussuaq is the only inhabited place in Greenland’s inland. Today you will enjoy a trip to the Inland Ice Cap to Point 660, which gives you the unique opportunity to stand on top of ice that is many, many metres thick and very old!  The inland ice sheet covers 80% of Greenland’s surface and is second in size only to the ice sheet in Antarctica. Travel by 4WD through the Arctic desert, along rivers, through old glacier valleys and over small mountains directly to the Inland Ice Cap. En route, we make several photo stops and walk to some viewing points to better overlook this fantastic Arctic landscape. The actual part of the Ice Cap visited will depend upon the weather.

Tonight if you are travelling on the departures from 25 September to 20 November, we search for the fabled northern lights. Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places to see northern lights in Greenland because of it’s very stable climate. We drive away from the village into the dark night and watch for the stunning sight of nature's own light show to (hopefully!) start. To see the fluttering curtain of light in various shades of green is an unforgettable sight.

Day 3 Russell Glacier
Today visit the spectacular Russell Glacier, an impressive sight with its vertical wall of ice rising up to 60 metres, in sharp contrast to the surrounding land and icescapes. On the way, we will be on the lookout for wildlife, such as reindeer and musk oxen, and listen to stories from the guide about the area’s history. After arriving, walk along the glacier’s edge, or simply enjoy its immensity. Here, the roar of melting and morphing ice structures are the only sounds that disrupt the peaceful silence.

Day 4 Kangerlussuaq- Sisimiut:  Welcome Meeting and Town Walk
This morning fly to the coastal town of Sisimiut, around 130 kilometres west of Kangerlussuaq. On arrival transfer to the hotel and check in. Then meet your local guide for an information meeting about the coming days and the town itself, followed by a guided tour of the town for an introduction to the area and local life. The tour starts at the old heliport, which was the only way into Sisimiut until 1998 and is now used as a husky kennel, then continues to the fish market, the town hall, and lastly the old part of the town, where the original buildings from colonial times in the 1700s stand. 4 nights in Sisimiut.

Day 5 Sisimiut:  Sea Safari
Today sail out into the archipelago and fjords around Sisimiut and enjoy the stunning views of the mainland and Mount Nasaasaaq behind Sisimiut. Out here, we also get a glimpse of sea life with all the sea birds. If we’re lucky, we might also see seals and whales.

Day 6 Sisimiut: Cultural and Historical Walk
In spite of the vastness and apparently inhospitable nature of Greenland, people have chosen to settle here through the ages. Teleøen island, Sallinnguit, is a place where past and present meet and where peoples of various Inuit cultures have inhabited the area for the past 4,000 years. Learn about the Inuit, and the impact of the arrival of Europeans, see the ruins and enjoy the beautiful views of the town and of the ancient hunting grounds.

Day 7 Sisimiut: Day at Leisure
Explore Sisimiut on your own today. Enjoy the town atmosphere, visit the cemetery, and browse for unique souvenirs.  Or perhaps pay a visit to the local museum, which offers local history and cultural exhibitions  giving you a real sense of what life used to be like in all parts of Greenland. The Museum also has several colonial buildings showcasing local artifacts & a reconstructed peat house.

Day 8 Sisimiut - Kangerlussuaq- Copenhagen
