With departures from Copenhagen or Reykjavik, discover a variety of wild nature in beautiful South Greenland, as well as learn about the fascinating Viking history.

Start in fjordside Narsarsuaq, where people have lived for thousands of years. The town's name even suggests an Arctic forest covered the large plain. With the first visitors taking stories back home, of verdant nature in a deep fjord, it is thought that the name Greenland originated here.

Then to Nuuk, the country's capital and a town full of contrasts. Old cultures and Arctic nature combines, while  high quality art and craft works cab be found. The National Museum houses a wonderful collection of artifacts and exhibits related to archaeology, history, art and handicrafts, plus the world famous Qilakitsoq Mummies.

Finally, llulissat, town of the Icebergs, with dramatic views of the World Heritage Listed site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord.

Day 1 Copenhagen or Reykjavik - Narsarsuaq
Make your own way to the airport for your flight to Greenland. On arrival, meet your local guide at the airport and transfer to the hotel. After check-in, a welcome meeting is followed by a guided walk around the settlement. A Welcome Dinner will be held this evening, at your hotel.

Day 2 Viking Ruins and Qooroq Glacier Cruise Greenland Ice Cap
Your guided tour this morning takes you to the Viking ruins. Cross Erik’s Fjord by boat and disembark at Qassiarsuk sheep breeding settlement; the exact spot where Erik the Red settled in 985AD and named his farm Brattahlið. We visit the farm ruins and as Thorhildur's church, the first Christian church on the American continent. This afternoon, you will see the Greenland Ice Cap which produces 250 million tonnes of icebergs per year, that break off the glaciers. Close to Narsarsuaq, Qooroq Glacier fills up the fjord with beautiful icebergs. Your guided cruise takes you as close to the calving glacier as possible, before the Captain turns off the engine to enjoy the silence. The only sound is the creaking ice. Light refreshments included.

Day 3 Day At Leisure for Optional Excursions
Today can be spent relaxing or you may like to do one of the following optional excursions:

Guided excursion to Igaliku Village (8hrs) – Travel by boat through ice-filled Erik's Fjord to Itilleq, then we start on our 3km walk to Igaliku. This beautiful old village has the ruins of a Viking Cathedral and Bishop's farm. After lunch, we walk back through the village to Itilleq and once again by boat, we return to Narsarsuaq.
Or
Guided hike to the Ice Cap (8hrs) - We journey by bus as far as the road takes us, then walk through Flower Valley with its colourful, sub-arctic flora. Lunch is enjoyed, 300m up the mountain with great views over the glacier and Ice Cap. For participants in good physical shape, it will be possible to walk down and touch the Ice Cap. (This hike is for those who can walk at least 6km in mountain terrain).

Day 4 Fly Narsarsuaq-Nuuk
Greenland’s small capital is a charming town with traditional, brightly coloured houses. Transfer to your hotel for check-in, then enjoy a tour including the harbour areas, Our Saviours Church built in 1894 and Parliament. Also visit the National Museum where our guide shows us the famous Qilakitsoq mummies, Greenland’s national costume and the qajaq. The remainder of the day is at leisure, for you to further explore at your own pace.

Day 5 Fly Nuuk-Ilulissat
Transfer to the airport for your flight from Nuuk to Ilulissat, where you will meet your guide. Transfer to your hotel for check-in and an information meeting. Afterwards, your guide will take you on a walk so you can become acquainted with the town of Ilulissat (Greenlandic for icebergs). This wonderful town with 4600 inhabitants is situated 200km north of the Polar Circle and is one of the world’s best spots for seeing gigantic, naturally sculpted icebergs, as they break off rugged glaciers and start their final journey towards the open sea. Time at leisure to enjoy your surroundings. Tonight, you will enjoy a delicious dinner at your hotel. Ulo Restaurant specialises in the freshest produce, with local staples including seaweed, musk ox, Greenland halibut and Greenlandic herbs.

Day 6 Sermermiut Walk to the Icebergs and Sunset Cruise Amongst the Icebergs.
Start today with a guided walk to the Icebergs of Sermermiut (3hrs). Travel by bus as far as possible, then walk from the old helicopter base along a stable wooden boardwalk, down to UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord. At Sermermiut, traces from the three old Inuit cultures can still be seen. This fertile valley is the perfect place to enjoy Greenlandic flora as well as fantastic icebergs. Light refreshments are included.

Enjoy some time at leisure until your evening cruise amongst the icebergs (2.5hrs). The Midnight Sun’s warm reds, yellow and oranges are all reflected on the gigantic icebergs and create a sight well worth seeing. You will cruise between the icebergs and enjoy a late drink on the real ‘rocks’. Your cruise includes light refreshments.

Day 7 Day At Leisure for Optional Excursions
Today can be spent relaxing or you may like to do one of the following optional excursions:

Hike the Cecily Trail (8hrs): On this guided, coastal hike you will discover various Arctic plants as well as the wondrous icebergs floating in Disko Bay. The trail is named after an annual run from Rodebay to Ilulissat and is used by locals and tourists, for dog-sledding in winter and walking in Summer. Tour includes a packed lunch. (Good physical fitness is required to participate – Medium level of difficulty).

The old hunter's Settlement – Rodebay (6hrs): Travel by boat to Oqaatsut (Rodebay), about 20km north of Ilulissat on a tiny peninsula facing Disko Island, with a population of less than 40 people. Largely dependent on fishing and hunting, it is a very different world compared to Ilulissat. Oqaatsut in Greenlandic means ‘the cormorants’ but it was later named Rodebay by Dutch whalers (18th Century). Lunch is included.

The old hunter's Settlement – Ilimanaq (6hrs): Travel by boat to the small settlement, Ilimanaq, sitting just south of Kangia Ice Fjord. Founded around 1741, the current population is around 80 inhabitants. Cruising to this tiny destination, you will pass massive icebergs lying at the mouth of Ilulissat Icefjord. Tour includes lunch.

Flightseeing by plane (35 or 60 mins): Window seats are guaranteed on this amazing and truly unforgettable way to see Greenland. Your 5-seater aircraft will cruise at a low altitude over Ilulissat area. Minimum 4 persons.

Home Visit (1.5hrs): Meet a local family for a cuppa at their home. Greenlanders are famous for welcoming visitors and inviting everyone over for a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. See the national costume and learn about a life, so very isolated from the rest of the world. Maybe even get some of the latest gossip.

Cruise to Eqi Glacier (6-7hrs): Cruise in front of the 5km wide face of Eqi Glacier. It is very active and we always hope for the unique sight of an iceberg ‘delivery’. This area is also excellent for spotting whales – fingers crossed, the sea’s gentle giants will also make an appearance. Tour includes lunch or dinner.

Visit the Huskies (1hr): Ilulissat is said to have more dogs in residence, than people! It is a dog-sledding area in Winter but even in Summer, they are very happy to see visitors. Join a local family to feed their dogs and their owner will demonstrate the sledding equipment, while you hear tails about a dog’s life in this part of the world.

Whale Safari (5hrs): Cruise into Disko Bay and search for whales. Capelin, a small herring-like fish, come to Disko Bay and the humpbacks come to feed on them. They are a protected species and quite trusting, so can often be enjoyed at close range. Tour includes a packed lunch.

Kayaking Master Class (6hrs): Try your hand at kayaking (2hrs). For centuries, this transport has been a vital way of Arctic life and your tour offers the chance to navigate amongst icebergs like an Inuit. No previous experience needed – a local instructor is with you at all times. Tour includes all equipment, clothing; plus lunch.

Midnight Sun Kayaking (3hrs): As you paddle past, witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs coming from Ilulissat Icefjord, as they glow under the light of the Midnight Sun. No experience needed – a local instructor is always with you.

Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening at your hotel.
