Experience a mix of discovery, fascinating history and great food in an authentic, historical setting.  Start with an overnight in Reykjavik, then spend 2 nights at an innovative farm accommodation and culture centre, the award-winning Wilderness Center on the edge of the Eastern Highlands, about an hour from Egilsstadir.  Here you’ll enjoy spectacular wilderness scenery, nature, local culture and delicious meals. You can indulge in some “digital detox” or relaxing down-time in an inspiring setting, or add some great optional activities such as horseriding or walking. Then return to the city for one more night.

Day 1 Reykjavik Arrival
On arrival at Keflavik Airport, transfer by airport bus to your hotel. The city centre is a small area, characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping and dining. Recently established as a haven for food lovers, Reykjavik has numerous restaurants and many take advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game.

The city also has wonderful museums including the National Museum, displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, for an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture. The Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10thC Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001. You may also like the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery

Day 2 Reykjavik – Egilsstadir- Wilderness Center: Abandoned Farm and Stargazing Station
This morning make your own way from your hotel to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport for the morning flight to Egilsstadir, the largest town in East Iceland.  If the skies are clear you’ll have views of majestic Vatnajokull Glacier on the way.   A local guide will meet you at Egilsstdir Airport and transfer you to the Wilderness Center, a scenic drive along the Lagarfljot River.  At the Center, enjoy an exploration of the unique wilderness museum with interactive exhibits created by local artists, film-makers and historians, then linger over a delicious lunch with local specialties made in the Center’s cosy kitchen.  In the afternoon your local guide takes you from the Center on a beautiful route alongside a glacier to a picturesque abandoned farm, where there are numerous waterfalls and traces of the past. Those who dare can experience the adventure of crossing the glacial river in an original (but now renovated!) hand-operated cable box. Then return to the farm for some light refreshments and time to relax, while taking in the view of the peaceful valley. Tonight indulge in a tasty dinner prepared from ingredients gathered in the nearby highlands- sit and watch your local hosts cook and chat with them as they prepare this feast.

After dinner, visit the Wilderness Stargazing Station, located in the reconstructed ruins of an old stone and turf sheep stable. This is a place with a fabulous view of the skies, where the historic location and the peaceful atmosphere makes for a magical experience. Use the Center’s powerful telescope for stargazing through the open roof, and be inspired by stories about how the distant stars have impacted those in the past.  Your hosts will make sure you stay warm with wool blankets, sheep skins, a campfire and hot chocolate.  Perhaps, if the conditions are just right, the northern lights might be out dancing?

Day 3 Day at leisure.
Today is a day to enjoy the beautiful and tranquil wilderness. After a delicious and plentiful  breakfast, visit the Center’s neighbour which is the last working farm in Iceland that still keeps sheep in a traditional turf and stone stable.  This is a perfect glimpse into how Icelanders of the past made use of local materials to survive in an often harsh landscape. The rest of the day is open for you to enjoy the inspiring setting to its fullest.  You can either relax on your own, or you can take part in optional horse riding, or an optional guided walk to Hengifoss Waterfall (one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, measuring 128 m). Lunch, dinner and 2nd overnight at the Wilderness Center.

Day 4  Egilsstadir Iceland’s Most Famous Forest and Town
After breakfast  relax until departing from the Center in the mid-morning.  Then visit Hallormsstadur, Iceland’s largest forest, for a guided walk, taking in the smell of birches and the sounds of the wind in the trees. Then on to Egilsstadir where there is free-time for you to explore this young but fast-growing town, before heading to the airport for your afternoon flight back to Reykjavík. On arrival at Reykjavík Domestic Airport make your own way to your hotel for overnight in Reykjavík.
