Combine the dramatic Viking history of Iceland with west Greenland's magnificent icebergs. This tour starts in Reykjavik, the world's most northerly capital city, an exciting blend of past and present, and your base for exploring the geothermal wonders of the Golden Circle -  Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir hot springs area and Thingvellir National Park. From Reykjavik fly to Ilulissat, the "Town of the Icebergs",  300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, where you can marvel at the majestic icebergs and get a glimpse of Inuit culture. The tour then concludes with your flight back to Reykjavik.

In winter, from mid February to late March, you can take a slightly shorter version of this tour - see our Volcanoes and Ice: Winter tour.

Day 1 Iceland Arrival: Reykjavik
Arrival at Keflavik Airport and transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik. 3 nights in Reykjavik.

Day 2 Reykjavik: City Sightseeing and Afternoon at Leisure.
Breakfast at the hotel then enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Reykjavik, which takes you to the city's main sights  through the old town and past the harbour, to see the summit-meeting house Höfdi, the House of Parliament, towering Hallgrim's Church and the open air museum Arbær, as well as the town of Hafnarfjordur where we visit the Fish Market.

The afternoon is at leisure. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10th-century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. 2nd overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 3 Golden Circle: Gulfoss Waterfall, Geysir Hot Springs and Thingvellir
Today's guided excursion is one of the best day trips in Iceland,  to the 3 sights that collectively make up the "Golden Circle". First is Thingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Altinget was established in 930; here you can also see the amazing geological sight of the 2 continental tectonic plates that are slowly splitting Iceland. Continue on to the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss, called the "Golden Falls"  and then finally visit Geysir, a geothermal area full of hot springs and bubbling pools of mud, and with Strokkur, the large geysir that erupts spectacularly every few minutes. The tour then takes you to the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi, where geothermal energy powers both domestic and commercial life.

Enjoy dinner tonight with an Icelandic seafood buffet at Restaurant Reykjavik, one of the city's oldest establishments. 3rd overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 4 Reykjavik - Ilulissat, West Greenland
Today transfer from the hotel to the airport for the flight to Ilulissat, west Greenland. On arrival, meet your local guide, and transfer to the hotel for check-in, followed by an information meeting and a guided town walk. Tonight enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Days 5, 6 and 7 Ilulissat Adventures
Days at leisure in Ilulissat for some great optional excursions as follows:

Walk to the Icebergs of Sermermiut: Travel by bus as far as the road goes, then enjoy a beautiful guided walk along the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord to Sermermiut, where traces from the 3 old Inuit cultures can still be seen. Sermermiut is a fertile valley next to the Ice Fjord and here you can enjoy the flowers as well as the views of the fantastic icebergs. Light refreshments are included. 3hrs.

Midnight Cruise Amongst the Icebergs: Tonight enjoy a midnight cruise amongst the icebergs. The midnight sun and the warm red colours reflecting on the gigantic icebergs is a fantastic sight. Cruise between the icebergs and enjoy a late drink on "the real rocks" ! The cruise includes light refreshments. 3hrs.

Old hunter's Settlement of Rodebay: travel by boat to the small settlement of Oqaatsut, also known as Rodebay, with a local population of around 40 people, still largely dependent on fishing and hunting - a quite different world compared to that of Ilulissat. Oqaatsut in Greenlandic means " the cormorants" and the village was then named Rodebay by Dutch whalers in the 18th century. The settlement is about 20km north of Ilulissat, on a little peninsula facing the island of Disko, so you will enjoy great views on the way to and from the settlement. Your tour includes lunch. 6hrs

Old hunter's Settlement of Ilimanaq: travel by boat to the small settlement  of Ilimanaq, situated just south of Kangia Ice Fjord. The settlement was founded around 1741 and the current population is approximately 80 inhabitants. The boat tour to Ilimanaq takes you among the massive icebergs that lie at the mouth of the Ilulissat icefjord, for exceptional views. Your tour includes lunch. 6hrs

Home Visit: Come join a local family at their home. Greenlanders are famous for welcoming visitors into their homes, inviting everyone over for a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. The latest gossip is shared, and your hosts will show you their national costumes and tell you all about life so very isolated from the rest of the world. 2 hrs including coffee and cake.

Cruise to Eqi Glacier: cruise in front of the 5 km wide glacier. The Eqi Glacier is very active so we hope for the unique sight of an iceberg “delivery”! This area is also an excellent place for spotting whales and hopefully the gentle giants of the sea will put in an appearance. Lunch is included. 6-7hrs.

Visit the Huskies: Ilulissat is a dogsledding area in winter, and the dogs in town are very happy to have summer visitors! Join in the feeding of the dogs; their owner will demonstrate the sledding equipment and tell you all about the lives of the sled dogs in Greenland. 1hr.

Whale Safari: cruise into the Disko Bay to spot whales -  humpback whales come to the Disko Bay area to feed on capelin, a small herring-like fish, and as they are a protected species, they are very trusting and can often be enjoyed at close range. Other species may also be seen. Packed lunch included. 5hrs.

Hike the Cecily Trail: Discover the different Arctic plants and beautiful icebergs floating in the Disko Bay on this guided full-day hike along the coast. Your guide tells you about the Cecily trail, named after an annual run from Rodebay to Ilulissat, used both by locals and for dog sledding in winter. Packed lunch included. Please note you have to be in good physical shape to participate in this medium level hike. 8hrs.

Sightseeing by plane 35 or 45 minutes or 1 hour: These unforgettable tours offer flights in a 5-seat aircraft cruising at low altitude over the Ilulissat area. Window seats are guaranteed. Minimum 4 persons.

Kayaking: Try your hand at kayaking with a local instructor. Kayaking has been a vital way of hunting in the Arctic for centuries and this tour will give you the opportunity to navigate amongst the icebergs like an Inuit hunter! No previous experience is needed as your instructor will be with you at all times. All equipment and clothing and lunch included. 6hrs inc 2hrs kayaking and transfers.

Evening Kayaking: witness the overwhelming beauty of the icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord, under the light of the midnight sun, as you paddle nearby. No previous experience needed as your local instructor will be with you at all times. 3hrs.

On the evening of Day 7 enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel.

Day 8 Ilulissat - Reykjavik
Breakfast at the hotel then transfer to the airport for the return flight from Ilulissat to Reykjavik. On arrival, transfer from the airport to your hotel in Reykjavik for overnight.
