Winter is a magical time of the year to visit Iceland - the air is crisp and trees are bare, the ground is snowy and magic is in the air. This budget tour allows you to experience the festive spirit of Christmas in Reykjavik, and also to enjoy 2 nights in the countryside, where the chances of seeing the fabled Northern Lights are much better, as you are far away from any light pollution.

Your tour explores southwest Iceland - this area is renowned for it's glittering glaciers, snow-clad mountains, giant lava fields and steaming hot springs. Bathe in the mineral rich geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, travel close to the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, see the famed sights of the Golden Circle, and more. In the evenings while in the country, gaze up into the Arctic night skies, to search for the Northern Lights. Merry Christmas, or Gleðileg jól as they say in Icelandic!

23 December: Reykjavik Arrival
Transfer by aiport coach from Keflavík International Airport to your hotel. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, and good shopping and dining, having been recently established as a haven for food lovers. Numerous restaurants take great advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game.

Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10th Century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. Overnight in Reykjavik at Hotel Cabin or similar.

24 December: Reykjavik City Tour, Reykjanes Peninsula, Blue Lagoon and Festive Christmas Dinner
At 09:00hrs, meet your tour guide and fellow travellers for the start of your escorted tour. Enjoy a city sightseeing tour, to see some of the highlights of Iceland’s capital. Then head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, bird cliffs, mountains, lighthouses and fishing villages. At the day's end, soak off your travels in the warm blue waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. We then stay for two nights in South Iceland at Arhus Cabins, Arhus.

In the evening we celebrate Christmas the Icelandic way with a Christmas Eve Dinner. First, we visit the traditional Christmas lights in the nearby villages of Hvolsvöllur and Hella. Then it's time for a festive 4 course dinner at Árhús Restaurant on the river banks in Hella. Drink a toast as you enjoy a special Celebration. Then afterwards, all you have to do to search for the Northern Lights in this dark, remote place, is to go outside and look up!

25 December: South Iceland and Optional Glacier Hike
Today we head along the south coast and reach an area near the active Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which lies beneath Eyjafjallajökull Glacier. We stop at the high, narrow Seljalandsfoss Waterfall which plunges from the mountain. Next, we visit Skógar Folk Museum, which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country - the 60m high Skógafoss Waterfall.

This afternoon you can do an optional glacier hike. Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends from the great Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, down to the sandy plains of Iceland's south coast. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. On this fun, safe and easy/moderate glacier walk, you get to explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges and deep crevasses on breathtaking Sólheimajökull Glacier. While enjoying all of the glacier's features, you will learn more about the behavior of glaciers and their impact on nature. No experience is needed- your expert glacier guide will teach you how to use the crampons and ice axe, and will be with you at all times. The unique experience of a glacier walk on one of the many retreating glaciers of the world is sure to leave lasting memories. Duration 3hrs being approx. 90mins on the ice and 30-40min walk (each way) from the parking lot to the glacier edge itself. The glacier hike is booked via your tour guide who will give you all the necessary information once your escorted tour commences.

If you do not wish to do the glacier hike, instead you will continue further south, to stroll on the unique black lava beaches next to the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara, near Vík. If the night is clear, tonight you might see the lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. 2nd night at Arhus Cottages.

26 December: Golden Circle - Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Geothermal Fields
This morning, we explore the 3 famous sights that make up Iceland's "Golden Circle". Start with the Geysir geothermal fields- as we approach. we will see steam rising from a distance. Here there are a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools including Strokkur (the Churn), which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Continue to Gullfoss (the "Golden Falls"), a double waterfall that tumbles 34m into the Hvítá River - a wonderful sight in winter. Then inland to Þingvellir National Park, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site, before returning for your final night in Reykjavik. Accommodation at Hotel Cabin or similar.

Enjoy a farewell dinner at a local Reykjavik restaurant tonight (with return transfers to and from the hotel included).
