Experience the best of Iceland on an expedition cruise aboard MS Fram around the island nation. This extensive voyage offers a spellbinding variety of nature, wildlife and settlements.

Expedition Highlights include spectacular views; thrilling Viking sagas of ancient times; the Westfjords' stunning nature reserve where teeming bird cliffs are abundant; vast lava fields, volcanic mountains and smooth hillsides; Grimsey Island which marks the place where the Arctic Circle touches Iceland; thick forests, lush farmlands and colourful fishing villages; wildlife including whales which may be spotted as we sail; unforgettable volcanic islands, and much more.

Your trip begins and ends in Iceland, giving you a great opportunity to add an exploration of the land of fire and ice before or after your voyage.

Cruises departing on 15 and 23 June, 01, 09 and 17 July 2020 and on 31 May, 08 and 16 June 2021 are 9 days duration and have the below itinerary.

Day 1 Reykjavik Embarkation 

Today make your own way to the pier to join your vessel MS Fram. If time allows prior  to embarkation perhaps explore the city which has wonderful museums including the National Museum, displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, for an excellent overview of Iceland’s history and culture. The Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archaeological museum based around a 10thC Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001. You may also like the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. 

Day 2 Stykkisholmur
The friendly town of Stykkishólmur has beautiful and well-preserved old houses in the town centre and is surrounded by wonderful scenery.  Explore the town´s interesting museums and architecture on your own, or join a 2 hr guided walking tour which includes a visit to the Icelandic Eider Centre.

Or join optional excursions - (i) scenic drive and walking tour with Dynjandi waterfall (medium level difficulty & 7 hrs duration); (ii) iconic sites of Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the black sandy beaches of Djúpalónssandur with a 45 minute hike (medium level difficulty & 5.5 hrs duration); (iii) hike in the Bersek Lava fields (medium-high level difficulty & 4hrs duration).

Day 3 Patreksfjordur
Patreksfjordur is a charming settlement on the West coast of Iceland with around 660 inhabitants, close to the spectacular waterfall of Dynjandi and to Latrabjarg, a renowned site for birdwatching. Explore the town on your own, or join a 1 hr guided walking tour.

Or join optional excursions - (i) scenic drive and walking tour to Dynjandi waterfall (easy level difficulty & 6 hrs duration); (ii) walk on stunning Látrabjarg Europe’s largest bird cliff and the western-most point of Europe (easy level difficulty & 5.5 hrs duration).

Day 4 Northwest Iceland
Your experienced captain will plan a day exploring the stunning fjords of northwest Iceland. Conditions will determine the final program and activity for the day. We might visit a small settlement, hike or launch kayaks.

Day 5 Akureyri
Akureyri is a lively town, famous for its botanical gardens and pretty buildings. Akureyri is the most populous community outside Reykjavík, and serves as the centre of trade, culture and services for the North of Iceland. Plus it is close to some of Iceland's most renowned natural treasures, such as Lake Mývatn and Goðafoss Waterfall. Explore the town on your own, or join a 2.5 hr guided walking tour.

Or join optional excursions - (i) visit Myvatn Nature Baths (easy level difficulty & 5.5 hrs duration); (ii) horseriding (medium level difficulty & 2hrs duration); (iii) Super Jeep tour and hike with highlights including Goðafoss and Aldeyjarfoss waterfalls, Lake Mývatn and the Lúdent crater (medium-high level difficulty & 7.5hrs duration).

Day 6 Grimsey Island
Today we use the ship's tenders to reach this small green and grassy island, best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the island. You have the chance to step across that line, North to South, in a special ceremony, which includes a visit to the local church.

Day 7 Bakkagerdi
Bakkagerdi is the main settlement in Borgarfjordur, in an area is known for its natural beauty and is called `the land of the elves´. Puffin colonies abound in the fjord, making this a popular place for birdwatching. Join a 4 hr excursion searching for these comical birds. 

Day 8 Heimaey Island
Heimaey, or “Home Island” welcomes us for a visit.  The harbour has a very narrow entrance, caused by a volcanic eruption in 1973, and most of the island has steep cliffs and is well-vegetated, providing a habitat for countless birds, including the charming puffin. Explore on your own, or join optional excursions being (i) guided coach tour (easy level difficulty & 3hrs duration); (ii) guided walking tour (medium level difficulty & 3.5hrs duration) or (iii) boat tour (easy level difficulty & 3hrs duration).

Day 9 Reykjavik: Disembarkation
Arrive back in the Icelandic capital early today and disembark.

All planned activities are subject to weather and ice conditions.  In order to experience some of Iceland’s incredible scenery, a number of the shore excursions on this itinerary require overland coach travel away from the coast.
