Continue to Kirkenes in Northern Norway for a King Crab Safari and overnight at the wonderful Snowhotel. The famous Hurtigruten vessels have been transporting visitors along the magnificent west coast of Norway for over 100 years. This voyage takes you from Kirkenes in the far Arctic wilderness south to the beautiful, historic city of Bergen, sailing through beautiful fjords and past many islands. Explore the rugged coastline and a collection of the country’s natural wonders, with the chance to enjoy various excursions en-route.

Day 1     Helsinki Arrival
Upon arrival in Helsinki, make your own way to Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna or similar and check in for overnight stay. Remainder of the day at leisure to explore. The many famous sights of the city include the Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, Parliament House, Finlandia Hall, Sibelius Park & Monument, Underground Temple, and much more.

Day 2     Helsinki - Rovaniemi, overnight train
After breakfast at the hotel, day at leisure. Perhaps explore the marketplace area down by the harbour, where there are food, souvenir and handicraft stalls, and fine old timber boats. This evening, make your own way to the train station for overnight train to Rovaniemi in a private sleeping compartment with ensuite.

Day 3     Rovaniemi
Early arrival by train to Rovaniemi, make your own way from the railway station to Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna Rovaniemi or similar and check in for 3 nights. Remainder of the day at leisure or time for an optional excursion – afternoon Snowmobile Safari to Wilderness or Evening Aurora Borealis Excursion by Snowmobile.

Day 4     Rovaniemi – Aurora Borealis Adventure by Bus
Day at leisure for optional excursions – visit Ranua Wildlife Park.  Evening excursion by bus to the Aurora Borealis camp, located away from the city lights with unlimited view to the northern sky. At the resort you will find the Aurora Borealis theatre build inside a snow igloo, presenting a film about the myths and facts of this natural phenomenon along with spectacular photos of the Northern Lights. You will also have time to roam around the resort, take a brisk sleigh ride with snowmobile drawn sleigh, or you can just lay back in snow observatory by the open fire admiring the northern sky. With a little luck the sky is clear and the moon, stars and even the Northern Lights may show up.

Day 5     Rovaniemi – Reindeer Safari to Santa’s Village
Lapland is well-known for Santa Claus and his reindeer. What a great way to see both – a Reindeer Safari to Santa Claus Village. Sitting in the sleigh pulled by the reindeer you’ll make your way from the Reindeer Farm to Santa’s Village along the snowy trails of the wintry forest. In the village you’ll have some free time to meet Santa in his office, send postcards from Santa Claus Main Post Office and explore handicraft, design and souvenir shops. Receive a Reindeer Driving License and a Diploma for Crossing the Arctic Circle. Transfers by car. Remainder of the day at leisure for optional activities.

Day 6     Rovaniemi – Inari, Aurora Snowshoeing
This morning, make your own way to Rovaniemi bus station. Bus trip from Rovaniemi to Inari Wilderness Hotel, located by the beautiful Lake Inari, offering breathtaking views and an ideal location for Northern Lights hunting (the trip is around 5.5 hours duration). Check in for 2 nights. Optional upgrade for 2 nights to a warm Aurora Cabin on the lake shore, with a glass roof for Aurora viewing. Dinner at the hotel. Evening guided Snowshoeing excursion into the dark forest by the light of the moon. Warm up with hot drinks by the campfire and with some luck the Northern Lights may appear.

Day 7     Inari – Husky Safari
Enjoy a Husky Safari today through the beautiful winter scenery, two persons share a sled. Lunch before or after the safari at the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Optional evening excursion – Aurora Snowmobiling or Under the Northern Lights with Reindeer.

Day 8     Inari – Kirkenes, Snowmobile King Crab Safari and Snowhotel
After breakfast, relax with a private car transfer which takes you along the shores of Lake Inari and other nearby lakes, over the Norwegian border to Kirkenes Snowhotel (the trip is around 3 hours duration). Upon arrival, meet the local resident reindeer and relax before dinner. Tonight you can choose between "cold" accommodation in a Snow Igloo or "warm" accommodation in a cosy and charming private Gamme Cabin.

Snow Igloo: The Snow Igloo rooms are wonderful displays of snow architecture and Arctic nature, created each winter from local ice and snow, with ice sculptures, ice carvings and more. In your Snow Igloo you will sleep on a bed carved from ice, snuggled warmly in a thermal sleeping bag and blankets.

Gamme Cabin: You will sleep in a private, charming wooden cabin, inspired by the traditional hunting and fishing Gamme huts of the Artic and Sami areas. The cabins are like small jewels and have every comfort including air conditioning, underfloor heating and a snug bathroom with a separate aurora glass wall. Best of all, the cabins have a large panoramic window and lounge chairs covered in sheepskins, so you can gaze out in warmth and comfort, as you look for the Northern Lights. Being so far away from light pollution, this is a wonderful place to seek the magical Aurora Borealis. All cabins have private facilities.

Afternoon Snowmobile King Crab Safari. Travel by snowmobile (with 2 persons on each snowmobile) to the fjord ice, where you help pull up the crab pots. The King Crab is served for lunch in a rustic restaurant by the fjord. Dinner at the Snowhotel. Optional evening excursion - Aurora Hunt by Bus OR Snowmobile OR Husky.

Day 9     Hurtigruten Voyage South – Kirkenes to Berlevag
Morning transfer to Kirkenes Hurtigruten pier to board your Southbound Voyage. As you set sail, you can enjoy a wonderful lunch followed by views of the Arctic wilderness from on deck or the panorama lounge. Throughout the voyage, there are various onboard presentations and off-ship activities. These include an afternoon presentation on Pomor trade history before the ship docks in Vardo, Norway’s easternmost port. Weather permitting, you may be able to experience ice bathing in the Arctic Ocean. You may even see a presentation of ‘Life in the Sea’ or local Arctic divers offer displays and lectures on deck, about life in the ocean. Continue along Varanger peninsula to Batsfjord, before reaching Berlevag in the evening.

Day 10  The Extreme North - Mehamn to Tromso
During the night we dock at Mehamn. We then continue to Oksfjord across open water, with a brief stop at Skjervoy, an old trading post. Onwards through Lyngenfjord where we are surrounded by the Lyngen Alps’, which over many months are snowy peaks. Here, a local fisherman may bring some local, freshly caught prawns, to taste. Arrive in Tromso, the Gateway to the Arctic, a charming city in a beautiful location. Perhaps visit the Arctic Cathedral, or walk around the town and try a local brew in one of the city’s pubs.

Optional shore excursions today: The World’s Northernmost Town, Midnight Concert in the Arctic Cathedral, Polar Night snowmobiling, Hammerfest Midnight Hike, Into the Ice – Polar Hero Story.

Day 11  The Lofoten Islands - Tromso to Stamsund
Morning arrival in Harstad. Here, the Risoyrenna channel at just 7m deep, was specifically made for Hurtigruten in the 1920’s to provide an inside route between Harstad and Sortland. Sand banks are visible through clear, green water, while Risoyhamn is a small village with only 200 inhabitants. A short here before we sail on via Sortland to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded more than 120 years ago. The captain then steers us through narrow Raftsund, before reaching the spectacular Trollfjord. At just 2km long, 100m wide and surrounded by majestic mountains, it is a truly remarkable place. If weather and time permit, a detour may be made here. Then on to Svolvaer, before heading to Stamsund, where the huge peaks of the Lofoten wall can be seen. From here we head in the evening back toward the mainland.

Optional shore excursions today: A Taste of Vesteralen, Horseriding in the Lofotens, Fishing Village walk.

Day 12  Crossing the Arctic Circle - Bodo to Rorvik
Crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N is an important event today and it is celebrated on deck, with a taste of Arctic traditions. Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountains, which are all between 900m and 1100m high. It is easy to understand why they have inspired ancient myths. After a short stop in Nesna, an idyllic old trading post, we sail on to Sandnessjoen. The UNESCO Listed, Vega Islands are nearby.

Optional shore excursions today: Bronnoysund Village Walk, The Gateway to Helgeland.

Day 13  In the footsteps of the Vikings - Trondheim to Alesund
Explore the city of Trondheim with its 1000 year history, before your vessel heads out of majestic Trondheimsfjord, 170km long and up to 25km wide. Like all Norwegian fjords it is deep, reaching 577m at the deepest. Sailing along the coast, you will come to realise the importance of fish to Norway’s coastal communities. Kristiansund’s location has formed the basis for a wealth of opportunities in the fishing, shipbuilding and oil industries, and the town reigns as Norway’s ‘cured cod capital’, due to its history of exporting salted dry fish.  As we cross the open sea to Molde, you will notice the steep, grey, pointed peaks of the Romsdal Alps.

Optional shore excursions today: Trondheim and Nidaros Visit, Nidaros’ Hidden Rooms tour, Bergtatt Marble Mine, Husky Safari.

Day 14  A Hanseatic city – arrival in Bergen
During the night, the ship will call at Alesund, Torvik and Maloy before the picturesque Nordfjord which sits under vast Jostedal glacier. Florø represents Sogn og Fjordane region’s oldest and Norway’s most westerly town. A few nautical miles south, we navigate the estuary of mighty Sognefjord and you will get the best views of the archipelago, before your arrival in Bergen. Your arrangements conclude following your disembarkation in Bergen.
