Experience the very best of the Nordic region and more on this comprehensive journey. From Copenhagen we travel to Oslo, the Norwegian fjords, Bergen, Stockholm, Helsinki and St Petersburg. Be amazed by the contrasts, from Viking Capitals to the wild nature of the Norwegian Fjords, to the enchanting palaces of St Petersburg, and enjoy the true essence, history and beauty of the north!

Day 1: Arrival in Copenhagen
On arrival in Copenhagen, transfer* from the airport to your hotel and time at leisure. The city is full of attractions, most of them located within walking distance of the city centre. Perhaps visit the Tivoli Gardens, the old harbour area of Nyhavn, now full of cafes, bars and restaurants, one of the many museums of art, culture, history and design, or stroll the charming pedestrian shopping streets of Strøget. Tonight meet your tour leader and fellow travellers and receive your Welcome and Information programme. 2 nights at Villa Copenhagen or similar.

Day 2: Copenhagen City Sightseeing
This morning enjoy a 3 hour panoramic city sightseeing tour, the perfect introduction to "Wonderful Copenhagen". We start with a drive towards the City Hall Square where the famous pedestrian street "Stroget" begins. We pass the Tivoli Gardens, dating back to 1843 and on past the New Carlsberg Glyptotheque and the National Museum. Next is the Old Stock Exchange and the Naval Church, then Kings New Square, the home of the Royal Danish Theatre with the world famous ballet, then through the old canal area, Nyhavn, with its picturesque houses and vessels. We continue to the impressive Gefion Fountain and then a photo stop at the Royal residence, Amalienborg Palace. We also view  Christiansborg Palace, housing the Danish Parliament and the Rosenborg Castle which houses the Crown Jewels. Finally we stop by the statue of the Little Mermaid. The remainder of the day is free. 2nd overnight in Copenhagen. 

Day 3: Copenhagen – Oslo by Overnight Ferry
After breakfast, the morning is at leisure. This afternoon, transfer to the pier by private coach and board the overnight ferry, bound for Oslo, departing at approximately 16:30hrs. Buffet dinner onboard as you cruise Kattegat Strait, and overnight in an outside cabin* with breakfast and dinner. *Accommodation in either Commodore Class or Outside 2 Berth cabins depending on bedding requested - the Commodore Class cabins have only Queen Size beds so those requesting Twin beds will be accommodated in Outside 2 berth cabins.

Day 4: Oslo
Breakfast on board the ferry, then arrival to Oslo at around 09:45. Disembark then meet your local guide for a 3-hour city sightseeing tour of the Norwegian capital, beautifully situated by the fjord. We will enjoy the view from the Opera House before heading off to Bygdoy Island. Here we will visit one of the most popular museums, the Viking Ship Museum (entrance included), with its three Viking vessels. Vigeland Park, one of the major Scandinavian cultural treasures, will then welcome us with sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, who dedicated his life to his artistic works. We will also pass by the Royal Palace and the main street, Karl Johan. The tour ends at the hotel, from where you will be free to explore the Viking capital at your own pace. Overnight at Clarion Hotel The Hub or similar. 

Day 5: Oslo – Lofthus
Breakfast at the hotel. Today we depart Oslo and drive across Hønefoss and Nesbyen, in a landscape which alternates between forests of pines and lakes, to arrive in the beautiful Hallingdal Valley. Just a few kilometres away, we visit Gol then Geilo, a small town surrounded by mountains and famous for its fresh air and beautiful views. We then drive to the impressive Hardanger fjord, and on to Lofthus, one of Edvard Grieg's favourite haunts, and one of the most beautiful points of the fjord. Dinner at your hotel tonight and overnight at the Ullensvang Hotel or similar. 

Day 6: Lofthus – Bergen
Today we leave Lofthus and travel back along the fjord to Brimnes where we cross Hardangerfjord on the wonderful Hardanger Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges. We continue along the fjord, past  Nordheimsund and through forests of birches until we arrive in Bergen. Bergen is the capital of the fjords, Norway’s second largest city and one of 3 university cities. Early in the afternoon, meet your local guide at the hotel, for a 2-hour panoramic city sightseeing tour during which we will visit St. Marys Church and Haakon’s Hall, (entry fees not included), then the colourful and picturesque fish markets and the old Bryggen area. The evening is at leisure. Overnight at Radisson Blu Royal Hotel or similar. 

Day 7: Bergen - Flam - Loen
Early morning departure from Bergen and travel to the stunning village of Flam. Here you can choose to take an optional  trip onboard the world famous Flam Railway, or an optional coach trip to the extraordinary and spectacular Stegastein Viewpoint 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord. Or simply stay in Flam to enjoy the charms of the fjordside village on your own. Details of the optional tours are below.

Optional Flam Railway Duration: approximately 2 hours. The Flam Railway also known as the Flamsbana is one of the steepest train lines in the world on normal tracks. The 2-hour return train journey runs through fantastic nature, past the Rallar Road, steep mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, 20 tunnels and offers a multitude of views. In the span of the trip  the train takes you from the ocean level at the Sognefjord in Flam, to the mountaintop at Myrdal mountain station on Hardangervidda, 863 metres above the ocean.

Optional Stegastein Viewpoint Excursion Duration: approximately 2 hours. The Stegastein Viewpoint is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route that runs from Aurland to Laerdal. The viewpoint structure juts out 30 metres from the mountainside, 650 metres above the fjord, and offers an unparalleled panorama. A more amazing view of the fjord, mountains and surrounding is hard to imagine.

From Flam we then take a short ferry trip along the beautiful Sognefjord – the longest and deepest fjord in the country. In the afternoon we will drive through the impressive mountains of Gaula, to get to Loen at the end of the day. Loen is a town beautifully situated between the mountains, lakes and fjords. Dinner and accommodation in the prestigious Hotel Alexandra or similar. 

Day 8: Briksdal Glacier Optional Excursion then Leon - Geiranger 
The morning is free to relax at the hotel. Or you might like to join an exciting optional excursionto the Briksdal Glacier, an arm of Europe’s largest glacier Jostedalsbreen. Here, we travel in small motorised "Troll" cars to the very tip of the glacier and experience the breathtaking blue ice.

We then depart Loen to continue our journey through the wonderful Norwegian mountains to Hellesylt. Here we take a ferry across the dramatic and impressive UNESCO World Heritage listed Geiranger Fjord, situated amongst lush mountains and wild waterfalls. Then on to Geiranger. Here we enjoy a special tour of the Veteran car collection of the Mjelva family at the local museum- a number of these beautiful cars were used to show tourists around the Geiranger area in the 1920’s and 1930’s and they are still in excellent condition. Dinner  and 2 nights at the Union Hotel. 

Day 9: Geiranger: Trollstigen
This morning we travel north to explore the Eagle's Road and Trollstigen or the Troll's path. The steepest section of Road 63 between Geiranger and Eidsdal is called Ørnevegen, or "The Eagle Road”, as driving along its eleven hairpin turns at 620 metres above sea level feels a little like being airborne. At the uppermost bend is the most spectacular viewpoint of the road, Ørnesvingen, offering breath-taking views over Geirangerfjord. Continue to Linge crossing the Storfjord from Eisdal and from here to the Troll’s path. Driving Trollstigen is a dramatic and exciting experience. In some places the road is cut into the mountain,  some parts are built on top of stone walls and an impressive bridge in natural stone carries the road across the Stigfossen Waterfall.  At top of Trollstigen there are viewpoints and steel walkways which allow you to get close to the dramatic mountains and waterfalls (Weather permitting as road closures can occur).  In the late afternoon, we arrive back at the hotel. 2nd night in Geiranger and dinner at the hotel.

Day 10: Geiranger - Oslo
Early morning departure by coach to Oslo. First we visit the famous point of Dalsnibba, an observation point located 1,476 metres above sea level, with a spectacular view of the famous Geiranger Fjord,  (The visit to Dalsnibba is subject to weather and therefore cannot be guaranteed). We continue on via Lom, to admire the oldest wooden Stave church in Norway, which dates from the 12th Century. We then travel via Otta, leaving the fjords area of central Norway. Late in the afternoon, we arrive in Oslo and check-in to our hotel. 2 nights at Clarion Hotel the Hub or similar.

Day 11: Oslo - Stockholm
Depart by coach for Stockholm, passing through the Norwegian and Swedish forests, and through the region of Varmland, the home of many legends. We arrive in Stockholm late in the afternoon for check-in.  2 nights at Hotel Haymarket by Scandic or similar. 

Day 12: Stockholm City Sightseeing and Walking Tour
Meet your local English-speaking guide at the hotel and start a 3 hour city sightseeing tour. The city of Stockholm, built on 14 islands and connected by 57 bridges, embraces both the unique character of the 13th century Old Town and modern high-tech architecture. Stockholm's islands are bordered by Lake Mälaren in the west and the Baltic Sea in the east, where the archipelago with its 30,000 islands sits, and the city is proudly called "the Beauty on the Water"  Our sightseeing tour includes a walk in the Old Town, and a visit inside to City Hall, where the Nobel festivities take place. The tour ends at the hotel and the afternoon is at leisure. 2nd overnight in Stockholm.

This afternoon you can also join anoptional 2 hour privately guided visit to the Vasa Museum,  to see the remains of the Vasa, an intact 17th century warship, one of the world's largest viking ships and the pride of the mighty Swedish navy. The Museum is built around the warship, which sank in Stockholm's inner harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628; its discovery in 1956 and subsequent salvage in 1961 is one of the most important events in marine archaeology. Painstakingly restored to its original magnificence, the Vasa represents an authentic piece of living history.

Day 13: Stockholm – Helsinki by Overnight Ferry
Morning at leisure then afternoon transfer to the pier by coach for departure on the overnight ferry. Enjoy a buffet dinner on board and overnight in an outside cabin.  

Day 14: Helsinki City Sightseeing 
Breakfast on board before arrival in Helsinki, where we disembark and transfer to our hotel. Then meet your guide to enjoy a 2-3 hour city sightseeing tour which includes Senate Square, the University and Lutheran Cathedral, all displaying the charming neo-classical architecture of the 1840’s. Continue on past the colourful Market Square in the South Harbour, Kaivopuisto Park, the diplomatic quarter, the imposing statue of Marshall Mannerheim, the Parliament Building, Finlandia Hall, the Orthodox Russian Church Uspenski and the Sibelius Monument. A visit is also made to Temppeliaukio Church – called the “Rock Church” as it is carved into solid rock. The tour ends at your hotel. Overnight at Hotel Kamp or similar.

Day 15: Helsinki - St Petersburg 
The morning is at leisure. In the afternoon we travel from Helsinki to St. Petersburg (this may be by train or coach). A city founded in 1703 by Tzar Peter the Great and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and known as "the Venice of the North", St Petersburg was virtually unharmed by the 1930-50s Stalinist reconstruction, and its treasures dazzle - splendid palaces, stylish monuments, straight avenues, beautiful bridges and other attractions. St. Petersburg is filled with history and mystery! Upon arrival in St Petersburg, transfer to your hotel and evening at leisure. 3 nights at Hotel Corinthia or similar. 

Day 16 St Petersburg City Sightseeing and Optional Peterhof Palace excursion
This morning  meet the local guide at the hotel for a 3-hour panoramic city sightseeing tour which will cover some of the many highlights of the city. We will drive along the Nevsky Prospect - the heart of the city, and make picture stops at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, Senate Square, Peter and Paul Fortress and St. Isaacs Cathedral, Arts Square and the Russian Museum, as well as at the two magnificent churches, the "Spilled Blood" and Nikolsky Cathedral. Tour ends at your hotel and the afternoon is at leisure. 2nd overnight in St Petersburg.

This afternoon perhaps join an optional 4 hour excursion to Peterhof Palace. The world-famous palace, fountain and park ensemble of Peterhof is an outstanding landmark of Russian artistic culture from the 18-19th Centuries. Founded by Emperor Peter the Great, not far from his new northern capital St Petersburg, Peterhof was intended as a splendid official royal summer residence.  The complex has wonderful parks, 176 fountains, 4 cascades, majestic palaces, numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes, and remarkable collections of sculpture, painting and works of arts. 

Day 17: St. Petersburg Hermitage Museum
Meet the local guide at the hotel this morning for a tour of the astonishing Hermitage Museum, which occupies six magnificent buildings situated along the embankment of the River Neva, right in the heart of St. Petersburg. The leading role in this unique architectural ensemble is played by the Winter Palace, the residence of the Russian Tsars that was built to the design of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1754-62. This ensemble, formed in the 18th and 19th Centuries, is extended by the eastern wing of the General Staff building, the Menshikov Palace and the recently constructed Repository. Put together throughout two centuries and a half, the Hermitage collections of works of art (over 3,000,000 items) present the development of the world culture and art from the Stone Age to the 20th Century. Today the Museum is creating its digital self-portrait to be displayed around the world. The tour ends at your hotel. Afternoon and evening at leisure and 3rd overnight in St Petersburg. 

Day 18: St Petersburg Departure
Your tour concludes today with a transfer* to St Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport.

Moscow Extension: 4 days / 3 nights

Day 18  St Petersburg - Moscow
Transfer from your hotel to the railway station and board the Sapsan train bound for Moscow. This train ride takes you through endless Russian landscapes and along the Volga River. Afternoon arrival in Moscow and transfer to your hotel. 3 nights at Intercontinental Tverskaya Hotel or similar. 

Day 19: Moscow: City Sightseeing 
Today enjoy a full day guided sightseeing tour. Moscow, with its 10 million inhabitants, is vast and at times chaotic but always an extraordinary place. We will see ancient churches and cathedrals, some of them dating as far back as the15th Century, beautiful theatres and palaces, buildings of late Soviet architecture such as Moscow State University and the Central Stadium in Luzhniki, the historic centre of the city which includes Red Square, Sofiiskaya Embankment, St. Sophia Cathedral and the panorama of the Kremlin walls. Also see the modern part of the city including Vorobievy (Lenin Hills) – the highest place in Moscow, providing a beautiful view of the city, and Poklonnaya Hill with its monument commemorating defenders of the city during World War Two. During this visit we will enjoy a tour of one of Moscow’s beautiful Metro stations, a highlight in itself. The evening is at leisure. 2nd overnight in Moscow.

Tonight you may wish to join an optional National Russian Dance show. The Dance Show “Kostroma” reveals the history of Russia and the life of its peoples, and showcases Russian culture through the more than 50 dancers on stage. Not available for the tour departing on 25 May 2020. 

Day 20 Moscow: Kremlin Excursion
Meet the local guide at the hotel for a half day excursion, which includes a guided tour of the Kremlin.  We will walk through the Kremlin grounds and visit the Armoury Chamber with its famous collection of Faberge eggs, jewels and royal thrones. The word Kremlin (Kreml) means a fortress or walled town and Moscow’s is the biggest and most famous. The earliest ramparts were of earth and wood, but successive rulers raised and strengthened the defences after every attack.  We end the tour at the hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure. 3rd overnight in Moscow.

Tonight you may wish to join an optional River cruise 3- 3.5hrs. Aboard custom designed vessels enjoy the splendour of the river, the architecture, the various other boats and the summer evening.

Day 21 Moscow Departure
Your tour concludes today with a transfer* to Moscow Airport.
