See the highlights of Denmark on this circle journey from Copenhagen west to Odense & North Zealand. Add extra nights in any town or in Copenhagen.

Day 1: Copenhagen Arrival
Upon arrival in Denmark’s delightful capital, make your own way to the hotel and check-in. Enjoy some of the many historical and fascinating sights & wander the Nyhavn quayside area for a beer and a taste of new Nordic cuisine at one of the many bars & restaurants. Most of the city’s attractions are located near the city centre, including Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg & Christiansborg (the Danish Parliament) Palaces, Gefion Fountain, Nyhavn (old harbour), the Little Mermaid, Round Tower, museum of Carlsberg & various art, culture, history and design museums. A stroll along the pedestrian street of Strøget is also be a pleasant way to spend some time. Overnight in Copenhagen.

Day 2: Copenhagen - Odense 168km
This morning pick up your rental car from the downtown office and depart from Copenhagen westward through farming countryside and small villages, some of which were founded by Vikings more than 1,000 years ago. Upon arrival in Roskilde - until 1417, the capital of Denmark – perhaps visit the Viking Ship Museum, containing the remains of 5 Viking vessels sunk more 1,000 years ago to prevent invaders gaining access to the town from the sea. Also explore the Town Square and the twin-spired Roskilde Cathedral - the construction of the Cathedral was commenced during the 12thC and additions have been made through the ages, in different architectural styles. The Cathedral is also the traditional burial place of Danish monarchs and contains more than 40 royal graves. Continue from Roskilde to Halskov and drive over one of the world’s largest suspension bridges constructed off-shore, to the island of Funen. From here, continue to Odense, Denmark’s third largest city and Hans Christian Andersen’s home town. We recommend a visit to the humble house, where the famous fairy-tale writer was born in 1805,  now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Overnight in Odense.

Day 3: Odense - Åarhus 142km
Leave Odense and cross the Little Belt waterway to Jutland. On the way to Åarhus detour to Jelling which, during the 10th century at the height of the Viking period, was the royal seat. Here you can see 2 large burial mounds and 2 rune stones, known as the Jelling Stones, which have given us crucial and fascinating information about early Danish and Viking history.

Continue to Åarhus, the second largest city of Denmark and also known as the City of the Smile. Visit the Old City (Den Gamle By), a fascinating open-air collection of complete, furnished old Danish townhouses. Also visit the cathedral and Moesgaard, the Museum of Danish prehistory. Drive past Marselisborg Castle, the holiday residence of the Royal Family. When they are not in residence, there is free admission to the delightful palace park. Overnight in Aarhus.

Day 4: Åarhus - North Zealand - Copenhagen 141 km
From Åarhus take the car ferry to Sjællands Odde, Zealand. Pass through rural villages and wooded, undulating countryside to Hillerød. Here we suggest you visit Frederiksborg Castle, the beautifully situated Renaissance building which like many others in Denmark was built by the orders of King Christian IV. Today, Frederiksborg is the home of the Museum of National History, the collection of which includes priceless paintings, silver and porcelain items, furniture and tapestries. The castle chapel houses Denmark’s oldest organ from 1610.

From Fredriksborg, if time permits drive on towards Helsingør, passing en route Fredensborg Palace, built in 1722, the Spring and Autumn residence of the Danish Royal Family. On arrival in Helsingor visit the imposing Kronborg Castle, which was the setting of Hamlet, the dramatic masterpiece by William Shakespeare.

Then take the coastal road, passing through small villages, fashionable resorts and some exclusive residential areas. Perhaps visit the Museum of Modern Art, Louisiana, or Rungstedlund, the beautiful family home of Denmark’s famous writer Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa; now a museum. Continue to Copenhagen for overnight.
