Enjoy an extended New Year adventure in Rovaniemi, with a great opportunity to both relax and to enjoy some fabulous winter activites including a Husky Safari, Snowshoe Walk, Snowmobiling, Ice fishing, a visit to the Arctic wildlife park at Ranua, a visit to the Arctic Snow Hotel and more.
Arrive at Rovaniemi Airport and transfer to your hotel. On the way, stop at the safari office, where you will be fitted with outer thermal gear - overalls, hat, boots, socks and gloves - which is yours to use for the duration of the tour; plus you'll receive the fine details and timing for your fabulous daily activities. The remainder of the day is free to explore or relax - perhaps take a walk around Rovaniemi and explore the stores and shops, and take a look at the Christmas lights. Enjoy dinner at the hotel tonight.
Today learn to drive snowmobiles and try some ice fishing. After a safety briefing and driving lesson it's time to start your engines! Each snowmobile takes two people – one driver and one passenger, with the opportunity to swap drivers half way through, so everyone can join in driving through the snowy landscapes. We travel to a local river or frozen lake, where your guide will show you how to use an ice drill, and hopefully you might catch some supper! A light lunch and ice fishing equipment is included. Dinner at the hotel tonight.
Today we visit the most northern wildlife park in the world, Ranua Zoo. See many of the wild animals living in Lapland – wolf, wolverine, lynx, bear, fox and polar bear. Enjoy a buffet lunch at the zoo and the beautiful Winter scenery on the way - often wild reindeers are seen on the roads. Dinner at the hotel tonight.
Today enjoy a visit to a local husky farm, and the chance to drive a team of huskies. After meeting the dogs, and a driving lesson and safety briefing, head into the snowy surroundings. 2 persons share the driving of each sled on the two hour sled ride, so you can take turns being the musher! A light lunch by an open fire is served during the day. Then this afternoon experience walking on both snow and ice, using snowshoes, one of the oldest forms of winter transport, to walk through the snowy landscapes. This is a lovely and quiet way to admire the fantastic winter wonderland that surrounds you, and perhaps to see some wildlife. Enjoy dinner at the hotel tonight.
Today visit an authentic reindeer farm in a little village outside of town. Here, we meet the reindeer herders who will be wearing their colourful, traditional clothes, and watch as they demonstrate their skills in handling the reindeer. Then time for a short sleigh ride, sitting cosily in the sled wrapped in blankets, while enjoying a relaxing and peaceful ride across the snowy landscape. After the sleigh ride listen to the herder's stories about reindeer herding and life in the Arctic wilderness. A light lunch by an open fire is served during the day. Tonight after a festive Gala dinner we go out into the wilderness, in search of the fabled Northern Lights, and to celebrate the New Year! As we watch the night skies, enjoy sparkling wine and fireworks, as well as some traditional Finnish shamanism and fortune telling. Who knows what the New Year will bring!
At noon visit Santa Claus Village we cross the Arctic Circle, and get a commemorative certificate of crossing. We meet Santa Claus himself at his office, and have the opportunity to send postcards from Santa's very own Post Office. This is also a great place for unique souvenirs and handicrafts, and you might meet Santa's reindeer here too. A light lunch is served during the day. If you prefer, you can today instead enjoy a guided snowshoe trip through the Taiga forest, searching for Arctic animals and enjoying the peace of nature. A light lunch by an open fire is served during the day. Please note this trip is not suitable for children as it is of medium difficulty.
