Winter at Apukka

Rovaniemi nature, stay in a glass roofed Aurora Cabin
Apukka Resort Rovaniemi, Finland © Apukka Resort

Finnish Lapland offers a wintry paradise with snow covered forests and the Northern Lights, both of which take you back to nature. Huskies, snowmobiling and other activities are fun to enjoy. Three wonderful nights in a Glass Aurora Cabin round off this experience.

Day 1 Rovaniemi Arrival - Aurora Glass Cabins, Apukka

On arrival at Rovaniemi airport/station, transfer to Apukka Resort, located about 15 minutes from Rovaniemi city centre in a peaceful area between two lakes, and the perfect spot, away from the city's lights, to look out for the fabled Northern Lights. Check in to your cosy Aurora Cabin. Each cabin has a bed right under the the panorama glass roof, which is heated and stays clear of frost and snow at all times, as well as a private bathroom with a shower and toilet, a small fridge and complimentary wifi. The remainder of the day is at leisure - explore your surroundings, with Mother Nature at her Arctic best. Or ask Reception about purchasing tickets on the shuttle bus, which runs regularly from the resort into the town centre and also to Santa Claus Village. Buffet dinner at the hotel tonight at Restaurant Aitta. The restaurant serves Nordic cuisine with a modern twist and uses locally produced ingredients. At the heart of the restaurant is a huge stone fireplace, and high windows in the dining area give amazing views to the lake.

Days 2 and 3 Rovaniemi: Winter Fun - Huskies, Snowmobiling and Outdoor Cooking

Back Country Dog Sledding - this trip is a true Arctic experience through a magical wilderness, as your team of eager huskies lead you across a white landscape of endless forests and frozen lakes. Along the way, stop to enjoy lunch around an open fire.

Scenic Snowmobiling - although the area is snow covered, you can still travel deep into the pine forests; maybe even see animal tracks along the way. After a snowmobile driving lesson, travel out to a remote wilderness spot, where your guide will show how to prepare and cook your own light lunch, then brew coffee, all around an open fire. This excursion is suitable for ages 14+. Families with children will have an alternative program

Gourmet Bonfire - Finns firmly believe that food tastes better when it is cooked in the great outdoors. Enjoy this cooking tradition, as you learn about local ingredients and Finnish cuisine. Build the fire, then slowly create each dish, before enjoying a wonderful lunch that you’ve cooked yourself.
