Greenland's stunning natural environment is beautiful all year, especially in the wintertime, when the land is covered by a blanket of snow and ice, and the fabled Northern Lights can appear in the polar skies. This fully escorted trip takes you from Copenhagen to magnificent Ilulissat, located at the world famous Ilulissat lce Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to huge icebergs that can tower up to 100m into the air, a sight you will never forget. Here you'll enjoy walking to see the icebergs at Sermermiut, a hunt for the Northern Lights, dog sledding, a boat trip on the ice fjord, an Inuit culture and food experience, plus a guided tour of the town. On Christmas Eve celebrate with a traditional Scandinavian festive dinner and a very different Christmas!
Make your own way to the airport for your flight from Copenhagen via Kangerlussaq and on to Ilulissat. If weather permits you might see some breathtaking views over the Inland Ice Cap and fjords, as you fly into the town. On arrival, transfer to your accommodation at Hotel Arctic, check-in, then enjoy an introduction and welcome meeting, followed by a guided tour of the town. Ilulissat is Greenland's third largest town and people have lived in the area surrounding for over 4,500 years. The town was established in 1727 and was a trading post known as Jacobshavn. Many buildings from this time survive, including the home of the world-famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen, now the building that now houses the historical museum. Visit the older areas, as well as the busy fishing harbour, the old Zion Church & the museum. Five nights at Hotel Arctic.
Today, we start with a visit to the former settlement of Sermermiut. We travel by bus as far as the road goes, then enjoy a beautiful guided walk on the boardwalk along the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord to Sermermiut. Here traces from the three old Inuit cultures can still be seen, and you can enjoy the snowy landscapes as well as the fantastic icebergs. Then time at leisure. Before dinner, we will have fun making traditional Christmas ornaments. Then after dinner it's time for this evening's Hunt for the Northern Lights. When the sky is clear on winter nights, you might see the most beautiful Northern Lights over Ilulissat, a truly spectacular phenomenon. We will drive away from the lights of the town to where the darkness is most intense. Here our guide will tell us all about the causes of the Lights and give some tips and tricks about taking the best photos. 2nd overnight in Ilulissat.
It's time for a boat trip on Disko Bay, to see the famous Ilulissat lce Fjord up close. Sail around and past some of the huge icebergs that are stranded here at the mouth of the fjord. Through millennia, icebergs have pushed the sandbanks forward, causing the icebergs to get stuck here as the pressure from behind increases. Christmas in Greenland is celebrated on Christmas Eve as the Scandinavians do, and tonight you will enjoy a traditional Scandinavian Christmas dinner. You might also try a dance around the Christmas tree, another local Christmas tradition! After dinner, you can go for a walk to see if the local children are singing Christmas carols outside their houses (they often do this on Christmas Eve, and hope to receive a small sweet gift for their efforts!) 3rd overnight in Ilulissat.
Today, we enjoy a fun dog sled safari. We ride in hilly terrain over the Small Akinnaq mountain, to reach a great vantage point for viewing the ice fjord. 2 persons sit on each dog sled, alongside the driver, so you relax and admire the scenery while the happy dogs do all the work! 4th overnight in Ilulissat.
Experience Inuit culture today. Travel to a traditional turf hut or tent in the mountains, where you can wrap yourself cosily in blankets and reindeer hides. Here, your guide will introduce you to the Inuit legends and myths that have been told through generations, and you will learn about the Inuit's special relationship to nature, while you also keep an eye on the sky on the hope that the Northern Lights will dance! You will also get a taste of different tasty, local specialties. You can also go on an optional snowshoe hike today. On this guided hike, you will follow a route from the power plant along the coast, with the opportunity to photograph the area and enjoy the panoramic view of the Sermermiut Valley, the icebergs and the Disco Bay. Please note this is a medium level difficulty hike. 5th overnight in Ilulissat
