This short tour takes you from Reykjavik to the charming town of Akureyri, Iceland's 2nd city. On a guided tour of the Lake Myvatn area, visit striking Godafoss waterfall, marvel at views of pseudo-craters and the lava pillars at Dimmuborgir, experience the boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits at Hverir geothermal area, sample fresh Icelandic cuisine, luxuriate in the natural hot springs of Myvatn Nature Baths and much more. On arrival in Reykjavik transfer by coach to your hotel. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping, dining and drinking. Reykjavík has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Reykjavik has many wonderful museums including the National Museum displaying artefacts from the first settlement to the modern age, giving an excellent overview of Iceland's history and culture, the Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum, an archeological museum based around a 10th century Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001, the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. In the morning make your own way from your hotel to the Reykjavik Domestic Airport (just 10 minutes from the downtown area) for the short flight to Akureyri, the capital of the north. The town, which is located less than 50km from the Arctic Circle, is colourful and easy to walk around, with a wide range of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Akureyri Art and City Walk (2.5-3hrs) - Visit some of Akureyri's Local Artists and walk through their workshops, the Akureyri centre, visit handicraft stores with north Icelandic designs and products. Stop at a small "retro" café to enjoy a local beverage!
Northern Lights Tour (3-5hrs. 1 Sep-1 Apr only) To go into dark, frozen Winter night with a chance to observe an unbelievable display of colour, light and texture is like waking up in a fairy-tale full of mystery and magic. Experience dark Icelandic winter night and a star bright sky. This tour is subject to the correct weather conditions & sightings cannot be guaranteed. Sightings are not guaranteed even if the tour is operated. In that case a second tour is offered free of charge.
Whale Watching (3hrs. 1 May-30 Sep only) Go whale watching from Akureyri and look for whales, orcas, dolphins & other sea wildlife. Brimming with wildlife the fjord offers breathtaking mountain scenery, lush green valleys and a unique coastal landscape peppered with iconic small farms and villages. Commentary through on-board sound system.
Today pick up from your hotel for a fully guided coach tour, visiting the highlights of the area including Godafoss waterfall, on the way to Lake Myvatn. Continue to the pseudo-craters of Skutustadagigar and, from there, to the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles), a series of lava pillars and strange formations. You´ll stop at the warm underground river in Grjotagja rift, and a pay a visit to the geothermal area of Hverir with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. Next, at the Krafla volcano area, you'll drive past the power station that harnesses pollution-free geothermal steam for the region. Then you'll explore the explosion crater, Viti, that was formed in 1724 in the Myvatnseldar eruption and enjoy the view over Leirhnjukur volcano. End the day at the calming Myvatn Nature Baths, here you can relax in the completely natural pool of geothermal water situated in the middle of lava fields, with a great view over Lake Myvatn. Return to Akureyri in the afternoon for your 2nd overnight.
Time to explore the town's shops, the Botanic Gardens or just relax, before you make your own way to Akureyri Airport for your flight back to Reykjavik Domestic Airport. On arrival, make your own way back to your hotel for one night.
