Icebergs, glaciers, hot springs and volcanoes are everywhere throughout Iceland, which is one of the youngest and most active geological lands in the world. This tour gives you the perfect opportunity to witness and experience the marvels of Mother Nature in its purest form, while also exploring the main attractions of South Iceland, including the beautiful Westman Islands. Discover the magic of these wonders and the magnificent natural landscapes surrounding them! The tour starts and finishes with one night in Reykjavik.

Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavik Arrival

On arrival in Reykjavik take the airport coach to your hotel. The city centre is a small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, good shopping and dining. It has recently established itself as a haven for food lovers, with numerous restaurants taking advantage of the abundance of local seafood, meat and game. Museums include the National Museum, Reykjavik 871+2 Settlement Museum (based around a 10th century, Viking longhouse unearthed in 2001), the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2 Reykjavik - Westman Islands

Morning departure from Reykjavik. Our first stop is Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can walk behind the waterfall, as well as around it. Then travel through the farmlands of the south coast to Landeyjahofn Harbour, from where we take the 30 minute ferry ride to the Westman Islands. Our destination is Heimaey Island, the largest of the islands and the only inhabited one. Here we visit Storhofdi Point, with its fantastic views over the area - from mid-May to the start of August, we may see puffins here. We take a walk up to the crater of the volcano that erupted only three decades ago, visit Eldheimar Museum and discover the flowers and grasses growing in the new lava field. The afternoon is at leisure, so you can further explore the island on your own. Overnight in the Westman Islands.

Day 3 South Shore - Skogar - Vik

The morning ferry takes us from the Westman Islands back to the mainland. From here, we travel further along the south coast, past numerous glacial rivers en route to our first stop at Skogafoss Waterfall. Enjoy at glacier walk or kayak tour at Solheimajokull - the operation of these excursions will be weather dependent. Continue on to the black sands of Reynisfjara Beach, where you can witness the powerful waves and amazing basalt column features carved by the power of the sea. Two nights in the Vik area.

Day 4 Vik - Skaftafell - Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Today we drive aross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the Earth, before reaching the small town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, the former site of a 12th century Catholic convent. Onwards to Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland's most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Continue to the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon to see floating icebergs and maybe a curious seal or two. Then continue on to the Fjallsarlon Lagoon for a zodiac boat trip. Throughout the day, we will enjoy magnificent views of mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. 2nd overnight in the Vik area.

Day 5 Gullfoss – Geysir – Thingvellir – Reykjavik

Start the day with a visit to the new Lava Centre - an interactive, educational and high-tech exhibition depicting earthquakes, volcanic activity and showing how Iceland was created over millions of years. Then we head for the Geysir hot spring area to see the famous Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes high into the air. Then we travel onwards to Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most impressive waterfalls and known as the "Golden Falls". Our next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the Viking-age parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. This is also where the European and North American tectonic plates are slowly pulling Iceland apart - a stunning sight. After some time exploring Thingvellir, we head back to Reykjavik for overnight.

Day 6 Reykjavik Departure

Coach transfer to Keflavik Airport, where your tour concludes.
