Take the famous Norway in a Nutshell journey... with a difference. Leave the Flåm Railway halfway down, for an exciting and easy guided bike ride into Flåm village. Then travel along Nærøyfjord (UNESCO World Heritage listed) in a fast RIB boat. A truly exciting way to do this wonderful trip!
"Our family of four loved the tour. They promised our tickets would be available for pick up at the Bergen train station and they were readily available. We took the train, then the Flåmsbana train (beautiful), then the BEST part of the trip was riding 6 miles all down hill on bikes. We could stop and enjoy the most magnificent scenery. We went to the boarding spot for the RIB boat. We were outfitted in their warm clothes. The RIB boat ride was absolutely breathtaking. The guide was very knowledgeable and fun. Then we took another small bus back to the train station. All of the travel was perfectly orchestrated. This was the best part of our trip to Bergen Norway." - Cindy, New York 2017.
Arrive into the Norwegian capital and make your own way to your accommodation. Remainder of the day at leisure - visit some of Oslo's fantastic museums including the Viking Ship Museum, the Fram Polar Exploration Museum & the Kon Tiki Museum. Or stroll the old wharf area of Bryygen, now a bustling, vibrant place with many bars, cafes & shops. Overnight in Oslo at Comfort Grand Central Hotel or similar.
This morning make your own way to the railway station for the train to Bergen - this trip is classed as one of the finest train journeys in the world, through the heart of southern Norway's mountains. On arrival in Bergen, make your own way to your accommodation. Time to explore this lovely old Hanseatic trading city; see the Fish and Flower markets, visit the charming old wharf area or take the funicular up Mt Floien for spectacular fjord views. Overnight at Hotel Augustin or similar.
This morning make your own way to the railway station for the train early train from Bergen to Myrdal mountain station. Here you will board the famous Flåm Railway - no other railway in the world, running on normal tracks, is as steep over the same distance. The route down from Myrdal is absolutely spectacular. The train passes Vatnahalsen Station, where there are magnificent views of the mountains and moorland, and the beautiful mountain lake of Reinungvatneten. At Kjosfossen Station the train stops so you have the chance to see the impressive Kjosfossen Waterfall, right next to the platform; the white water cascades off the steep mountain side and dissolves into foam with a thunderous roar, as it hits the mountain on its way down. The train then passes through a hairpin tunnel that turns 180°, with an opening in the tunnel affording a panoramic view of the wild landscape below. Looking several hundred metres straight down from the carriage window, you will see the river which resembles a silver ribbon lying on the valley floor. The section of the Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Berekvam is truly the most spectacular - from here on, the valley widens and the scenery becomes more pastoral, so don't worry - you definitely get to see the best parts of the scenery before leaving the train! At Berekvam Station, about half way down from Myrdal, leave the train to meet your guide, then continue down the 11km to Flåm by bike, following a track along the river, with spectacular views of the waterfalls, mountains and valley and plenty of photo stops along the way. No special fitness or experience is required. At Flåm enjoy some time at leisure in this pretty village - perhaps visit the Railway Museum, stroll along the shores of the fjord or enjoy a cup of coffee. From Flåm board the RIB boat for the safari along the glorious Nærøyfjord, named by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 2005. Your guide will take the boat on an exciting ride, travelling close to the sheer mountain walls, so you can see the full beauty and majesty of this unqiue waterway. You will also experience the tranquillity of some hard to reach and seldom visited areas, learn about the history and geography of this amazing place, and maybe even spot some seals. After a 1.5 hour boat ride, arrive in Gudvangen, at the head of the Nærøyfjord. From here, drive by car or minibus, up the twisted road and hairpin bends of the Stalheimskleiva Road, and up the Stalheim Canyon, to Voss. From Voss, take the train back to Bergen, at any time you please - your return ticket is open. 2nd overnight at Hotel Augustin Bergen, or similar. Or, for those feeling up to more adventure, you can add sea kayaking from Gudvangen, or white water rafting from Voss, before returning to Bergen. See details below.
Arrangements end this morning after breakfast.
