Experience Norway's far North from the town of Alta, where the blue light of winter glows over the landscape. Around 1-2 o'clock each afternoon, with the residual light of day reflecting off the blue sea and white snow, the landscape is bathed in a glassy deep blue colour. In the heartland of the ancient Sami peoples, enjoy a truly wonderful arctic adventure. Search for the fabled Northern Lights, try your hand at dog-sledding and go on a snowmobile excursion. Upon arrival, make your own way to your hotel. In the evening it's time to chase the Northern Lights. From your hotel travel by car to the best viewpoints, far away from any sources of light pollution in the town. Your guides are keen photographers and they will help you capture get the best photos possible. Then return to your hotel.
Set off this morning for an exciting dog sledding safari along the Alta riverbanks, or into the Alta valley up to the Finnmarksvidda mountain plains. 2 persons share the driving of each sled. As you glide along, you'll be delighted with the smooth power of the enthusiastic dogs and the tranquillity and beauty of the natural environment. Then take a well-earned break for a homemade lunch around an open fire, before returning to Alta. Time at leisure - perhaps visit Alta's fantastic new Northern Lights Cathedral, with its amazing architecture inspired by the Aurora Borealis. The swirling waves of the Northern Lights was the inspiration for the spiral design of the titanium clad building. In the evenings concerts are held in the Cathedral where you can enjoy the acoustics and remarkable shapes of the interior.
This morning enjoy a snowmobile safari which includes a visit to the fabulous Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Set in beautiful natural surroundings by the banks of the Alta river, the extraordinary Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is a luxurious hotel where the entire interior and exterior is made anew each year of snow. The hotel opens its doors in January each year and melts away again in the spring. 2 persons share the driving of each snowmobile, so you can both enjoy the thrill of driving, and the view as a passenger. There is time to explore the Igloo Hotel and perhaps enjoy lunch (please note lunch is NOT included). After your visit, return to Alta. Or, if you are feeling adventurous, you can add an overnight stay tonight at the Igloo Hotel.
Following breakfast, your tour arrangements conclude.
You can choose to add an optional night at the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, on the banks of the Alta River, where everything is carved from snow and ice – the 25 rooms, the beds, even the glasses in the ice bar – but you'll be warm overnight in your sleeping bags and reindeer hides. Your overnight adventure includes transport from/to Alta, accommodation, a morning sauna and breakfast. The Northern Lights may even dance overhead. The adventure starts with your departure from Alta at 4pm and finishes with your return at 10:30am the next day. Available from 15 December to 07 April - please enquire.
