Adventurous Norway

Adventure and exploration in the fjords, with the Flåm Railway
Flåm biking, Norway © Sverre Hjornevik/Visit Flåm

Experience some of the most beautiful places in Norway – deep and majestic fjords, icy glaciers, mountain plateaus and sweeping rivers, with some great exciting extras. Enjoy a guided glacier walk, downhill biking beside the route of the Flåm Railway and white water rafting - adventures you will never forget - plus enjoy Bergen and the smaller fjord towns of Voss, Sogndal, Balestrand and Flåm.

"Our family of four loved the tour. We took the train, then the Flåmsbana train (beautiful), then the BEST part of the trip was riding 6 miles all down hill on bikes. We could stop and enjoy the most magnificent scenery. All of the travel was perfectly orchestrated. This was the best part of our trip to Bergen Norway." - Cindy, New York 2017.

Itinerary

Day 1 Bergen Arrival

On arrival in Bergen, make your own way to your hotel. Time to enjoy the city sights. Stroll the streets of Bryggen, an area included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In 1360, the German Hanseatic League set up offices at Bryggen, and the fine timbered houses reflect the city's history and heritage, with narrow alleyways and overhanging galleries. Overnight in Bergen at Hotel Zander K or similar.

Day 2 Bergen - Sogndal: West Coast and Cruise on the Sognefjord

The morning is free before your afternoon departure by express boat from Bergen, heading north along the western coastline of Norway. The journey continues along the Sognefjord, the world's longest and deepest fjord, to the charming village of Sogndal. Two nights in Sogndal at Quality Hotel Sogndal or similar.

Day 3 Sogndal - Jostedal Glacier Walk

Today take a coach from Sogndal to Jostedalen, along a valley with spectacular scenery shaped by glacial erosion, to the Nigards Glacier, a glacial outlet of the massive Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier in Northern Europe. Visit the Glacier Museum, the official visitor centre of the Jostedalsbreen National Park, where you can enjoy some great exhibits explaining how the glacier was formed and describing the natural history of the area. Then after a boat trip to the edge of the glacier itself enjoy an exciting two hour guided glacier walk, a short and easy "blue ice" trip taking you deep into an icy landscape. After your adventurous day in Jostedal, travel back by coach to Sogndal, for your second overnight.

Day 4: Sogndal - Balestrand - Flåm

Today depart Sogndal and take the ferry to Balestrand along the Sognefjord, then a second ferry from Balestrand to Flåm, along the Aurlandsfjord. Sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular fjord views. Arrive at Flåm, a small and charming village nestled at the end of the fjord, here you can visit the Railway Museum, stroll the fjordshore or walk up the valley to the old wooden church. Two nights in Flåm at Flåmsbrygga Hotel or Fretheim Hotel.

Day 5 Flåm Railway and Downhill Biking

This morning take the famous Flåmsbanen Railway from Flåm up to the small mountain station of Myrdal. No other railway in the world, running on normal tracks, is as steep over the same distance as the Flåm Railway, and the route down from Myrdal is absolutely spectacular. The train passes Vatnahalsen Station, where there are magnificent views of the mountains and moorland, and the beautiful mountain lake of Reinungvatneten. At Kjosfossen Station the train stops so you have the chance to see the impressive Kjosfossen Waterfall, right next to the platform; the white water cascades off the steep mountain side and dissolves into foam with a thunderous roar, as it hits the mountain on its way down. The train then passes through a hairpin tunnel that turns 180°, with an opening in the tunnel affording a panoramic view of the wild landscape below. Looking several hundred metres straight down from the carriage window, you will see the river which resembles a silver ribbon lying on the valley floor. The section of the Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Berekvam is truly the most spectacular - from here on, the valley widens and the scenery becomes more pastoral, so don't worry - you definitely get to see the best parts of the scenery before leaving the train! At Berekvam Station, about half way down from Myrdal, leave the train to collect your mountain bike, then continue down the 11km to Flåm by bike, following a track along the river, with spectacular views of the waterfalls, mountains and valley and plenty of photo opportunity stops along the way. 2nd overnight in Flåm.

Day 6 Flåm - Gudvangen - Voss: Nærøyfjord Cruise

This morning leave Flåm and take the ferry to Gudvangen. The narrow and spectacular Nærøyfjord is surrounded by steep mountains with snow covered tops that stretch up to 1,800m above sea level; waterfalls cascade down the verdant mountains and picturesque villages dot the landscape. This is an area that is featured on the UNESCO world heritage list and is considered one of the world's most beautiful fjord landscapes. At Gudvangen board the coach for the ride to Voss, travelling down the steep hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva. Overnight in Voss at Park Hotel or similar.

Day 7 Voss - Bergen and White Water Rafting

This morning try the thrill of easy white water rafting, just outside Voss. This is truly great fun - you will get wet, you will have to paddle, you might fall in, the raft could flip over, but you are guaranteed to have the time of your life! In the afternoon board the train in Voss for the short trip back to Bergen. Overnight in Bergen at Hotel Zander K or similar.

Day 8 Bergen Departure

After breakfast check out and end of arrangements.
